Pulling back a verbal

What's on your mind?

by NumeroUno » Tue Oct 13, 2009 11:55 am

Last weekend I was out at the Surf City Showcase in Huntington Beach. I heard from a few people that a local So Cal College pulled back a verbal from a senior. I heard she verballed either last year or the year before. I also hear that other colleges wanted her and she turned them down to go to this college. How bad does this look for this school to do this? Should others that have verballed to this school start to worry? Would you shy away from this school knowing that they did this to a kid especially in her senor year?

You mean pull back an offer.

Was it a verbal offer or a written offer? Not that it should make a huge difference but at least in football, if a school is serious, you'll get a written offer. Kids have them now waiting to sign and fax them back in Feb.

If it's verbal, the possibility exists the kid didn't fully understand conditions on the offer. It's also possible the school decided they liked someone better and pulled a fast one.

If all that gossip mill is true, that SUCKS for her since she's a senior a few short weeks away from signing a NLI.

But there is so much more to it than that. Did the coaches change? Is the kid failing classes now? Did she quit pitching lessons a year ago? Is she an OF or SS who gained 50 lbs? etc, etc.

If it is just a offer retraction just to get another player, shame on them.

It is too bad on both fronts. The parents should have pushed harder to get it in writing, especially if she passed on other schools. Sounds like the parents better get busy with contacting other schools.

But it really shows the morals of this "institution of higher learning."

Are we going to hear what school it was? Not a need to know, just curious.

To answer all your questions, no there was not a coaching change, her grades and SAT scores were just fine for entrance, she is a catcher with a cannon arm and big bat, they pulled her scholarship to get another player.

And to "Outfielder" - written agreements are not allowed by the NCAA. The earliest date is the signing day of the NLI in her senior year in November.

Snag is right. Alot of variables in this to make a judgement call on the school. But with that said, if the school pulled the offer because it wanted another player then I agree, shame on the school. From my very limited experience a "verbal" is a big deal to those that I know and have "verbally committed" to schools. The player commits to the school and one would hope that the school is committed to the player.

The young ladies I know in this situation will be wearing wristbands at exposure tournaments showing them as committed and essentially taking themselves off the market to interested college coaches. Playing time will be provided to uncommitted players so they could be showcased and the committed players will get limited game time to keep them sharp. The focus will shift from them because it is perceived that they have an offer and that offer was accepted.

I guess that kind of sums it up for me.
