STAMFORD -- Allie Souza, a three-sport standout from Westhill High School, has verbally commited to play softball at Yale University next year.

A three-year starter at center field for the 2010 state champion Vikings, Souza learned she has been accepted to the New Haven-based university earlier this week and will join the Bulldogs program coached by ASA Softball Hall of Famer Barbara Reinalda.

"I've always wanted to use softball to get the best education I could," Souza said. "Did I ever think Yale? No, absolutely not. It just kind of happened. I put feelers out to a wide section of schools and started hearing back and things just worked out. I took my visit in September and I loved it and I verballed right then."

Souza kept the secret until she was officially accepted.

While Yale may not be a softball powerhouse, even in the Ivy League, Souza said that's just fine with her.

"We're going to win some and we're going to lose some. We'll see what happenes," she said. "Every class brings a whole different value to a program. Then again, even without softball, it's like, 'Oh my God, I'm going to Yale. I'm getting a degree from Yale.'"
