Pop up down 3rd base line on the foul side of the line. SS runs over to make the catch, the ball hits her glove while her feet are in fair territory but yet the the ball is clearly in foul territory. It then bounces into fair territory after she missed the catch.. Your call???
Would there be a different take on it if she was in the air landing in foul territory and the ball hitting her glove and landing in fair??
What is the ruling on the play??

Foul Ball. Doesn't make any difference where the defender is, or where the ball ends up. It's where the ball is when first touched that determines fair/foul.

Welcome to Umpiring 101... ;)

It matters not where the player's feet are when the ball is touched. It matters where the ball is actually touched in relation to the foul line.

Once touched over foul ground, and subsequently not caught, the ball is dead and foul. Wherever the ball bounces after that point is irrelevant.

Would it be different if the player was in the air when the ball was touched over foul ground? No.

Ruling in either case: Foul Ball.

I saw this play the other day. Ump said fair ball at first since he stated she was in fair territory when she touched it. Coach came out to question the call, ump then changed it to foul, his reason was since the girl was not in fair or foul territory but in the air, it would then be a foul ball :o

Spoke with his partner and then gave the right reason it was foul..But glad he took the time to get it right even though he did not remember the rule at first.
