Going to first on a HR

One of my kids caught this and asked, not sure of the answer.

Hawaii player hits HR, takes two steps toward first base then takes one back to see if it is fair. My kid immediately says she is out. I say Hmmm.... I see your point, not sure. Is it different on a home run?

At least in ASA, the batter-runner is only out for stepping back toward home if avoiding or delaying a tag.

NCAA:
12.29.5 The batter-runner may not step back toward home plate to avoid or delay a tag by a fielder.
EFFECT—The ball is dead, the batter-runner is out, and each runner must return to the base legally occupied at the time of the pitch.

Same is true for ASA.
