Did she swing??

On a pitch called a ball, I've seen the catcher ask the PU to ask the BU if the batter swung. That makes sense to me, maybe PU was so focused on location they missed a swing.

Last night I saw a batter ask the PU to ask the BU if she swung because the PU said she swung when she quite clearly didn't. The pitch was well inside and the PU's call was "she went!". The batter moved her feet for a drag/slap, but bat never left her shoulder.

The PU asked the BU for his call and he also indicated strike which is a fine show of solidarity if not the correct call . I didn't have a horse in this game, just watching one of my summer players HS game and this didn't involve her. I'm not really that worked up about one strike call, but it seemed odd to me that the PU would ask her partner for his call.

If the PU see's a swing, is that something you can appeal? I wouldn't think so. In a two umpire game not sure how the BU has a better view of a lefty's swing (or no swing) than the PU anyway.

Speaking ASA:

If the umpire calls a ball he may "go for help" on the swing.

If the umpire calls a strike (on the swing), he should never "go for help".

I say speaking ASA because some orgs (like NCAA) require the umpire to go for help on request if the call is a ball.

That doesnt really bug me as long as its a 3 umpire system. In a 2 umpire system I will not go for help in certain circumstances.

When I have a new umpire ask me if she went on a strike call, i will call either talk with the umpire right away or just affirm the strike and talk to them later, but I would never over turn a strike call because you cannot go for help on that.

Since an umpire is not supposed to call a strike unless it is in the strike zone or the batter swing. Based on that premise, if the umpire calls a strike on the swing, it is given that the swing was seen. Forget what you did or thought you saw, it is irrelevant. An umpire should not go for help after calling a strike.

Saw this happen today in a HS tournament. Batter attempts to check swing, blue calls strike 3. OF Coach asks PU to get help from BU. PU actually does it, they talk, and comes back and says "no swing".
Was a bit surprised that PU went for help.

Poor mechanics by the PU. The PU after calling the strike should not have honored the coach's request.
