lets assume speaking ASA....

running attempting to steal 3rd. Catchers throw hits batter. when is it batter interference?

also, a runner is only out when hit by a ball, when the ball is hit off the bat and its determined that a fielder did not have a play at it. meaning 2nd base made an error and ball went through her legs hitting runner. correct?

having a discussion, and a man said if the thrown ball hits a runner say in a rundown, then the runner is out....

thanks for info

I think Reggie Jackson might disagree with that rule interpretation. ;)

Batter interfering with play is a topic that has come up often lately. There's actually another thread started today on the subject. You might want to search it out and have a read.

Basically, if the batters actions cause her to interfere with the catcher attempting to make a play, interference should be called. Batter does not need to clear the batters box...the onus is on the catcher to create her own throwing lane.

As for your run down scenario, unless the umpire deems the runner intentionally interfered with a thrown ball, it is not interference if the runner is merely hit by the thrown ball.

Very true, its the batters box and she has every right to stay in box, but she cannot make a malicious attempt to hinder a throw regardless if in box or not, total judgment call by blue.

this man was certain he was right about being hit with the ball. I said it has to be off the bat not by a throw. If that were true it would be like dodgeball. just throw at the girl.

Only when the batter actually does something to interfer. Inaction is not actively hindering the catcher (7.6.Q)

It would depend upon whether another fielder was in positon to field the batted ball and get an out. (8.8.D)

having a discussion, and a man said if the thrown ball hits a runner say in a rundown, then the runner is out....

Only if the runner did something to cause the contact with the ball and interferred with the play. (8.7.J)

Careful there....batter making an attempt to interfere...malicious or otherwise....is not part of the criteria.

It is simply her actions while within the box.

She could be squatting down to duck out of the way to actually allow the catcher to throw down. If the umpire feels it was this action that led to the interference, he'll call it.

Wow. The term "malicious attempt" is a new on for me!

Is that when the batter interfers by swinging her bat at the catcher's head?

No Bret ... it would have to be by 'swinging her bat at the catcher's head and missing'
