Coach Interference

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by Hoover'sDad » Mon May 31, 2010 6:56 pm

A 3B coach reaches out and pulls a runner back to the bag to keep her from possibly continueing on and getting tagged out at Home.

If it were seen by an ump, the runner is out and is the coach ejected, or is the runner out andcoach just warned?

Same situation, 2 umpires on the field, the base ump is trailing the last base runner, becasue two runs have already scored, the HPU is standing at or near home looking up the 3B line. The field ump does not see the coach grab the BR by the arm( 3B or SS are block his view. The HPU clearly sees the coach grab the BR. The BR gets back to third safely, and is not called out by the field ump.

Can this be appealed by a coach to see if the HPU saw the coach grab the BR? Since the HPU priority was a HP.

Situation uno....
Runner out/ no ejection, no warning... coach can be responsible for outs as often as he likes. :D

Situation dos...
This call can (and should) be made by either umpire.
In the event that it wasn't called, it wouldn't be inappropriate for a coach to ask the umpire if he saw the in fraction and if he didn't, ask to check with his partner.

Speaking ASA, this is not interference, but assisting a runner. The runner is out, ball remains live, DMC.

Two things: The BU was obviously way out of position AND s/he can, but this is a call the PU could have made (if seen) once it was realized the BU wasn't going to make it.

At least these were assisting the runners. When will the umps start doing their postitions on the fields and remove coachs for constant complaining about every little thing? One coach complained about everything more than my wife this last weekend in Huntington. Dosen't he know this delays the game and takes time off the clock. Might not be a bad idea if the team was winning. Thanks for the lesson in what not to do when your a coach.

Oh yeah....
You know, I read and re-read the OP twice looking for the word "Interference" and didn't even think of the title!

No problem, I was confused, too. I clicked on the thread completely expecting a post about a coach getting beaned by a ball, and instead I find a post indicating assisting a runner. Imagine my disappointment. :D

Sorry, I could not think of what term to use other than "interferance".

Umpiring and knowing when to cut a coach off is like a clock pendulum. New umpires seem to allow it to go on to much and don't know how to handle the situation. 2nd through 5th year umpires (speaking in generalities) seem to go to far the other way and let ever thing the coach says produces an argument/ejection. After that the blues know when and how to shut it down. Plus, by this time a blue should know how to explain the ruling to the coach. And, that goes along way in ensure the coach that s/he was a good umpire calling the game.
