**disclaimer: as always, anytime i am doling out info, don't bet money on it or assume it is correct...

runner has to tag up, but can leave base after fielder touches the ball for the first time.
same as a fly to the outfield that fielder bobbles but catches. runner can tag after fielder touches ball for the first time.
if that wasnt the rule, a fielder could theoretically bobble/tip the ball all the way into the infield without actually catching it, and the runner would never be able to tag....
so if the runner was on the bag when the fielder touched the ball the first time, she can run home. if she was off 3rd base when fielder touches the ball, and never went back and tagged, i think she would be doubled up if fielder throws back to 3rd base...
that's how i see it anyways, im sure the resident umps could explain it better....

calm as usual
of course...
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

It is early here, but why does the runner have to tag up, after the ball goes off the glove?

Theres no need to "tag up" if you are still on the base when the ball first touches the glove, you didnt leave the base early.

Players usually come off the base when the pitcher releases the ball...

OK. I come off the base, on the pitch. I am 10 feet from the bag. The pop fly hits a player's glove and ricochets in the air.

You are saying, I need to go back to the bag and tag? I wouldn't.

What am I missing here?

If it richochets of her glove but she catches before it touches the ground you absolutely have to go back and tag up or your liable to be put out on appeal for leaving early.

If you hadn't led off you could have left as soon as the ball made contact with fielder and not had to wait for control to leave the bag. That's the rule.

You need to tag up if the ball is caught for a fly out. The point of this post is you can tag up on/after the initial contact and start advancing before the ball is caught for the out.
