2009 NFHS SOFTBALL RULES CHANGES

ART. 2…Attempted Bunt. Holding of the bat in the strike zone is considered an attempted bunt. In order to take a pitch, the bat must be withdrawn – pulled backward and away from the ball.

Rationale: Changing the definition will make the bunt attempt easier for an umpire to determine and creates a better balance between offense and defense.

Yep, thats correct. I do wish ASA would follow suit to line up with the others.

I thought you were saying they couldnt dive back in NFHS which of course they can.

Little League baseball prohibits headfirst slides, so there is the possibility that folks familiar with Little League think the rule applies to all ballgames and rule sets (it does not).

I've also heard "no sliding at first base" used as one of those undying rule myths, like you can't switch to the other batter's box once you have two strikes or hands are part of the bat. It's one of those "playground rules" people hear as a kid and just think it's a real rule.

Whatever the mix-up, sliding at first base is not prohibited under standard NFHS rules, nor is sliding headfirst at any base.

So, most likely, one of those rule myths. Frustrating in that particular game, a 1-0 loss, the high school team lost lead-off base runners in two innings because of that blue.

Its an attitude problem that has to do with being incredibly aggressive.

Only one blue has called her out - she has done it many times on many different fields and most of the time, is safe.

Being "overly" aggressive can be just as detrimental as not being aggressive in all facets of the game. Using her head as to when to dive and not is the key.

How she looks doing it is not a concern of hers. Being overly aggressive is a great problem to have - its fixable. Not being aggressive - is not fixable.
