Strange situation - I think Blue made a mistake

Rule question? Get it answered here.

Really, this is an old topic that is only amplified by over zealous officials or umpires that think it is their job to "get outs".

I worked with one of those umps this weekend that call the exact same play except this time there was noway a Double Play could happen. The BR was 3 steps from first when the out at 2nd was made. Asked him after the game how he could call INT when there was no chance of getting the out at 1st. He told me only a play. I told him he needs to read the def. of Double Play in the book. He answered "I got the out didn't I?" I answered, "I rather have you get it right".

Because the batter is required by rule to abandon the BB when there is a play, lingering in the BB isn't part of the game or the batter's job and it isn't interference if they are doing what they are supposed to do.

As has been stated numerous times, there must be an act of interference

I do understand what you are saying here. I want to know when R1 is out, what is her responsibility on the play now?
If she keeps running toward 2nd base is that int? She had plenty of time to see what was going on and she all ready probably knew where the ball was hit that she was going to be thrown out at 2nd.
I just want to understand what is R1's responsibility is after she is out?
I could argue she meant to keep running at the bag and that her intent was to interfere with the throw..

You can argue all you want, your question have been answered a couple of times. Don't know how many more times you can be told the same.

vcblue - unfortunately you just described 90% of my association and one of the predominant unwritten "rules" discussed openly at every umpiring clinic I've ever attended.

What's the worst thing that can happen to an umpire when he gets home after a game?

I think you might need a hug..

I am not trying to argue the point, I am trying to understand what the determination is (so be it I might be a little slow) and yes there has been a few differences in opinion here.

Every ump will decide what they consider int. differently. I am trying to understand what it is that they would consider int. in the first place. (I heard intent and I also read in this post you do not consider intent)
When is the girl required to get out of the way? Right away, does she have the right to be in the base path until she reaches the base?

Ok I have one for you. R1 does veer of to the left after seeing she was out. The shortstop fields the ball behind 2nd and in line with 1st to 2nd. She has a clear shot at 1st but steps towards 3rd place R1 between her and 1st. Coach wanted DP INT. I said No.

The bottom line is whether in this situation or F2 throwing to 3rd it is up to the fielder to field the ball, see where the B/BR/R is, choose a path to throw the ball where she can make a play. After all of that if the B/BR/R moves into her or the ball or INT in anyway I call it. It is that simple.

An umpires "mantra" of having a job of getting outs, as part of the overall atmosphere of umpiring, has NOTHING to do with misinterpretting a rule and/or making a horrible call. Nothing.

MTR wrote: About now, someone is going to say, "but the runner should veer off" Really? Show me a rule which requires a runner to be a mind-reader.

Actually if I saw a runner veer off some where and do the hokey pokey or something and get hit with a ball I would be much more inclined to rule that interference than if a runner did her job.
