Umpire Inattention

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by topper » Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:57 pm

While the OP may or may not be considered a rant, the situations in it seem to be a little far-fetched and provocative. If these are descriptions of actual events, I'm mildly surprised, but not shocked. I am not, nor will ever be, an apologist for poor umpiring. Nor will I blindly defend ASA officiating. The conduct and philosophy of its leadership are at the core of the underlying problems that GSB's remarks address. I have worked hard to reach whatever level I'm at and owe absolutely nothing to ASA or any other organization in general. Some on here may consider this heresy, but it is what it is.

Having said that, I would invite all "arm chair umpires" to strap on the gear and step out here and get some of this. Some will be successful, some not, but I guarantee they will have a new appreciation for what we do.

So by your remark, I take it you are not certified by any governing body to be an umpire, as you owe absolutely nothing to anyone. I guess all the folks that worked with you, mentored you and helped you to get started should be easily dismissed as well.

It really doesn't matter if your certified as no governing/certifying body requires even the most basic of vision tests to be certified. So being certified really doesn't count for anything anyway.

I guess by your other remark that anyone can do it, as you invited everyone to "strap on the gear." Maybe I will get out of my armchair and do it. Could someone please help me to the field as I am a certified umpire but can't find my seeing eye dog.

And you folks think my comments are far fetched.

The 3 to 6 seconds thing was figurative and not literal. I could have just as easily said 20 to 30 seconds later. The fact is the umpires are not watching the plays and still making the calls.

I never said either of these 2 things. You quoted my post, maybe you should read it.

You have now exposed yourself as a fool whose comments warrant little serious attention. Good luck to you and yours.

I guess tongue in cheek commentary is way over your head. No worries Topper. I will stick to small words with very direct meanings from now on so you can understand.

Ok, I am typing very, very slow so Topper and Wade will understand. The original post is in my opinion, a fair and true summation of things that are happening. I will say that the 3 to 6 seconds is a little off, but the point is the same. The post Topper was attacking was meant as tongue and cheek commentary in order to make a point. Some very well known comedians and politicians use this method to convey a point and get a laugh at the same time. I will try it again, but I will type slower for you two.

I understand that even a remote suggestion that (some) umpires could improve their performance hurts you beyond belief. I further understand that you will take all suggestions for improvement of the game as a rant or personal attack. Even when the posts clearly exclude you as a part of the problem. All the folks who are not umpires are emotional fools who just don't get it, or have absolutely no understanding of the rules. Even though some of these folks may have been umpires for 10 years or more in other parts of the country before getting involved in other aspects of the game now.

All umpires are perfect and never, never, never do anything wrong or ever, ever, ever get a call wrong. They never look the wrong way when a play is going down and never, never, never position themselves in a wrong place during a play. The photo posted on the first page of this thread is obviously a photo shop job and the many folks who make the same points are smoking crack. Anyone who offers suggestions or makes a point that hits home must be dealt with quickly. Either ignore their post, label them a fool, or change the topic.

Let me know if I missed anything. I want to make sure, I have the rules down pat, as they apply for umpires on this board.

I've been wrong about this a few times before, but I strongly sense a "manpon" or "panties in a bunch" retort coming your way.
