They're out there though. I had the bases for a HS Varsity game earlier this week.

Situation 1: R1 at third and B2 gets a base hit to center field. F8 rockets the ball to F2 who tags R1 out and B2 advances to second base. From a knucklehead in the stands I hear "C'mon blue, you have to put the batter back at first base, the ball became dead when the out was made at home plate."

Situation 2: Batter hits the pitch and the ball bounced off the corner of the plate slowly rolling fair near first base foul line. PU signaled the ball fair. The BR ran a few feet and stopped when the first base coach held up her hands and told the BR it was foul. F3 picked up the ball and tagged the BR. I banged the out.

From the peanut gallery I hear: "Terrible call! That's a foul ball, it bounced off the plate."

Looks like it could be another HS season of grins and giggles!

Situation 1 almost sounds like that could be a regional lower level rec rule ... maybe to keep 6 year olds from running around the bases as kids are throwing it around ... LMAO!

Situation 2 ...

I think that understanding that the plate itself is in play is one of the most misunderstood rules in youth baseball/softball, along with the related misunderstanding that close to half of the batters box is also fair territory.

I've heard inexperienced umpires call "foul ball! It hit the plate!" and just groaned inwardly because that creates another generation of players/parents/coaches that don't understand the rule and because they heard one blue call it wrong, they're sure they are right when it happens again and blue calls it different.

Come on, an umpire would never, never, never do that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the expression " Never, ever, ever do that " ... Clarification please .

So, you have no experience with baseball, yet choose to belittle someone as "chicken" for not umpiring baseball.

Interesting.. I cant think of anytime I've seen that called at any appreciable level of officiating. I cant even think of the last time. Countless times a year Ive had coaches and fans cry out for that call. I was not aware there was some past umpire to blame for all those coaches and fans not knowing the rules of this game! That bastard! Learn something new every day.

You know, you should pass on to these coaches and fans that the rule book is written in the Queens English and they are certainly free to peruse it on their own. :ugeek:
