What overrides what in the batting order if the numbers are obviously out of order and but the player gives the correct name what is your call after the first run through the order.

First run through, second or last, it doesn't matter. By rule, it is always the name that overrides. Numbers aren't even required on the official line-up given to the umpire. They may be given as a courtesy, or to aid in the administration of the games (subs, etc.)

The position belongs to the batter- the person- and not the jersey.

Correct the number on the score card and play on.

(See ASA 3-6-D, which covers numbers on jerseys, and 7-2 which notes the batting order is determined by name, not number.)

Bret,

You may want to go back and check ASA 4.1.A.1

Even better. There are three rules referencing this and I only found two of them!

Rule 3-6-D notes that there is no penalty for a player wearing a wrong number.

Rule 7-2 says the batting order shall show the names of the batters, with no mention of numbers.

After finding those two rules, I though that it was pretty well covered. But there's one more...

Rule 4-1-A(1) says the official line-up shall also include numbers. So numbers it is!

That rule also gives exact instructions about an incorrect number on a line-up- correct it without penalty.

Good catch, MTR.
