Courtesy Runner Question?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

Saw this one last night and had never really given it much thought.

HS or FED rules. Courtesy runner is entered for the pitcher. Courtesy runner is retired on a force out and then later in same half inning pinch hits for another player. Can this be done or is the Courtesy runner tied to the pitcher?

The way it happened last night, the CR pinch hit, swinging at the first pitch for a strike. The opposing coach then questioned the home plate umpire probably thinking they would get a cheap out. Both umpires confered and decided the CR could not bat. Then another batter came to the plate and assumed the count of no balls and one strike.

Thanks.

In Fed, a courtesy runner may not substitute for any player in the half inning that she ran as a courtesy runner. Rule 8-9-art.4. There is an injury exception, but that obviously doesn't apply to your situation.
A player who violates the CR rule is an illegal substitute.
Penalty is, in your case, restricted to bench/dugout and called out. See rule 3-4-art. 1 and 2.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the correct penalty and thought that the umps had probably handled it right. They handled it like a batting out of order.
