Interference on Runner

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by SB DAD » Mon Apr 04, 2011 10:19 am

Is it interference on a runner?
Runner on 2B, Batter hits a ground ball to SS, runner from 2B runs towards 3B, SS atempts to field grounder and gets scared as runner is running, SS missplays grounder, THERE IS NO CONTACT BETWEEN FIELDER AND RUNNER, but since runner was close to fielder she is called OUT!
Is that interference on runner? Does there need to be contact in order to get an interfernce call?

What level of play and how close are we talking? Contact is not necessary, and younger age groups and lower level of play will usually give more benefit to the defensive player. Older age groups and higher level of play generally requires contact or obvious attempt to interfere.

I saw this happen at a high school game on Saturday at the Savanna Tournament and the blue called obstruction. The call was pretty bad, the SS was chasing the ball and got wiped out by the runner and he called obstruction, talk about getting mixed up, :D

When you say chasing, did SS legitimately have a play on the ball? If the umpire judged they didnt, then it would have been a propper obstruction call.

If the fielder was legitimately attempting to field batted ball - no way we have obstruction...
and from your description, sure sounds like Interference.....

We(TX SHOCKWAVE) had interference called on us twice against and one for. Heres what the definition in how blue told me after I aske several questions.
"Runner must give the defensive player a chance to field the ball. The runner can run out of the baseline legally to avoid player"
"Runner can run in front of a ground ball as the pro's do to disrupt the sight of the ball as long as no contact with ball or defensive player.
This play happened in the "IF"championship game between TX Thunder and TX Shockwave.
"If the ball is hit to defensive player and they bobble it or knock it down before the runner makes contact with the defensive player it is NOT interference.

If the play happened just as you described it in your post....I've got no interference.
To answer your last question, you can have interference by a runner without having contact.

Unfortunately sometimes you have to make contact in order to get umpires to make the correct call.To tell you how bad the umpire was in that Shockwave game.A ball is hit almost directly at the SS ,she charges in to make the play and collides with the runner and 1 or both of them falls down. This was textbook interference but even if it wasn't the blue has to call something its either interference or obstruction when there is a collision in that situation. He called nothing and then tried to say the ball was past the ss whem the collision occurred which was not the case.In a championship game with 3 umpires he also refused to talk about it with his partners to get the call right.

Good Luck Shockwave I know we will be seeing each oter again soon!

Can a runner try to smack the ball out of the glove as she is being tagged?

We had this in HS game... runners at 1 and 2, grounder to SS, she plays it, steps up to tag runner, who smacks the SS glove and ball jars free.

As it turns out, ball went straight to 3b and they got the force out. All well and good, except the SS had a legit double play attempt on the throw to second (or first) that didn't happen due to runner's actions.

Correct ruling?
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

You go with that, but don't complain when the umpire ignores the INT/OBS and throws the player out of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Well, if you really are what you name states, I guess you will be enrolling in umpire classes next January. :D
