Quick question. Once BR reaches 1st base safely, is the orange safety base considered the same as the white portion? So for instance, pitcher has the ball in the circle, runner at 1st in her ready to run position, but has her foot next to the orange portion of the base not the white portion. Is she off the base? Is she safely on 1st? Thanks for your help.

It is one base after the BR passes it. Next to the base? No. Contacting the base? She's okay.

This should be an easy one, I think the orange safety bag is used only for the BR running down the line so she doesn't step on the first baseman heel, after that she should be on the white bag, if she is next to the orange bag i think she would be losing a step or two on her way to second base,She should push off the white bag, Just like the first baseman can not touch the orange bag for the out, So i think she would be out if she is off the white bag, just my opinion

It was easy, but your opinion is inaccurate. Once the BR passes the base, the runner may return to either portion and on any subsequent play, the defense may also you any part of the base.

A couple of years ago, that would be correct. This rule change establishing this as one base for any player other than the batter-runner became efective in 2007

No, not at all. For ALL players except the BR, the base is 15" X 30" stradling the foul line. I cannot make it any plainer than that.

ok i understand, but when they changed the rule back in 2007, is it in a ASA rule book and if so what is the rule # on that, just incase it comes up again, you should know the # if you are an umpire. thanks

ASA Rule 8-2-M 1 thru 9, covers how the double base is used. However, it has 9 subsections covering various scenarios.

1. Batted ball hitting or bounding over the white portion is fair.
2. Batted ball hitting or bounding over the colored portion is foul.

This rule pertains to your question above.

3. When a play is being made on the batter-runner, the defense must use the white portion and the batter-runner the colored portion of the base.
Effect: The batter-runner is out when there is a play being made at first base and the batter-runner touches only the white portion, providing the defense appeals prior to batter-runner returning to first base. Once the runner returns to the white or colored portion of the base, appeal shall not be honored.

Now 4 and 5 is some how missed by a lot of coaches:

4. On any force out attempt from the foul side of first base the defense and the batter-runner may use either the white or colored portion of the base.
5. On an errant throw pulling the defense off the white portion of the base into foul ground, the defense and the batter-runner may use either the white or colored portion of the base.

6. …. Hits to OF w/ no play B-R can use white or colored.
7. …..Tagging on fly ball runner can use white or colored.
8. …..Pick-off play the runner can return to white or colored.

9. On plays at 1B when the batter-runner touches only the white portion of the base and collides with the fielder about to catch a thrown ball while on the white of the base. EFFECT M-9 Interference, the ball is dead, the batter-runner is out and runners must return to the last base occupied at the time of interference.
