Two man mechanics question

Rule question? Get it answered here.

R1 is on 3rd, R2 is on 1st. On the pitch R2 jogs to 2nd. F2 in no hurry finally fires the ball to 2nd. R2 gets in a run down. PU goes about halfway to 1st, yelling I've got 1. BU moves towards 2nd. After a couple of throws in the rundown, R1 at 3rd starts getting off the bag towards home. F4 fires to F5 and tags R1 out going back to 3rd.

My question, who has the call at 3rd on this? It's got to be BU. Furthermore, with the PU going up the line about halfway for a possible call at 1, who's got the plate? I ass-u-me the PU does. In our case the blues were so focused on the rundown, I think both of them forgot there were other base runners, and subsequently both caught with their pants down. Neither of them saw the play at 3.

The plate ump should not have moved to 1st on this play. The runner at 1st and the rundown belong entirely to the BU. The runner at 3rd becomes the PU responsibility. The PU should have moved up the 3rd base line slightly into a holding area and watched the play develop. When he saw the throw coming to 3rd he should have then moved to 3rd to cover the play.

Where did this happen at? That's a really big mistake by the PU.

In two umpire mechanics, with multiple runners, it is not a good idea to try to bracket a rundown with both umpires.

When this happens, I (BU) will usually announce to my partner that I have the whole thing, and s/he needs to cover the other runner(s).

the fact that the PU actually moved out from behind home plate is pretty cool. In our area they barely bend over to clean off home plate. usually kick dirt off with there shoe.

MommyBaller ... Good name ...

Question : Have you seen a shoe ? Answer : There is a shoe over there.
Question : Who is a shoe ? Answer : They're a shoe.
Question : What did the Umpires clean the plate with ? Answer : Their shoe.

JK  ... And I agree, as I suspect do many Coaches and many Umpires ...

Non-sanction all-comer "world series" in Indy. Mainly central Indiana ASA and high school blues. The call didn't amount to a hill of beans. I thought it was an interesting situation to throw out. I knew PU shouldn't be taking 1, not sure where he should be though. We had the girl at 3, not even close. No one saw it, so they called her safe. No biggie, the sun came up the next day.

That's good! Must have brain farted and forgot that there was a runner on 3rd.
