Catchers Obstruction

Rule question? Get it answered here.

R1 on 3B, 2 Outs. 2 -2 Count. Batter hits catchers mitt while putting the ball in play. The outcome of the play was 3rd out via 6 -3. Plate Umpire rules "Dead Ball Catchers Obstruction". After discussing with his partner he puts the batter back in the box and awards the batter a ball and the count is now 3-2. R3 is returned to 3B. Is this the correct ruling?

[ASA] No, batter should be awarded 1st base. Runners advance if forced and for your situation, if the runner on third was stealing home or there was a squeeze play, she's awarded home.

oops Umpire and coach error.
See Crabby_Bob's answer concerning what the award should have been on this delayed dead ball.

The game was played under protest. We won so the protest was dropped. Why did you think the coach made an error?

His batter should have been awarded 1st base. Was the protest about this play?

Original Post made no mention of coach protesting or otherwise question the call.
If that is in fact what the coach did, then he did the right thing.

Yes, since the PU ruled that the batter gets a ball instead of first he was protesting. Since we won and the protest was dropped we never got an official answer as to whether the protest would have stood.

I find it rather amazing that the coaches and umpires can't agree to just take a rule book out and get it straight as soon as it happens. I think that egos get in the way.
