Why would the flex have left the game if the dp was listed as the pitcher at the start? The DP may play defense for anyone except the flex without it being a substitution. At the start of the game, the coach chose to use the DP/Flex option, and chose to have the DP play defense as the pitcher. Completely legal.

Just symantics of the wording of the rule. It is perfectly legal to start the game with the DP playing pitcher on defense. If the coach did list her with a defensive position, yes, it was an incorrectly filled out lineup card, but something easily correctable by the umpire (change the 1 to a DP). And all the coach has to do is say to the umpire, and my DP will be the pitcher.

It's not semantics of the wording of the rule. It IS the rule. The whole fundamental principal behind the rule is to have the DP not play defense (yeah, yeah, of course there are exceptions and that is what we are talking about). Here, the coach improperly listed her on defense. 100% inaccurate and I'm not starting the game until the coach can figure out how to manage his own line-up card. If he can't figure it out (like many coaches and umpires), then he can play with 9.

And when the coach says, "My DP will now be my pitcher," the coach has to state whether he is dropping the Flex or simply having one of the other nine players play offense only. That is because an accurate line-up must reflect whether the Flex has left the game for re-entry purposes. Do you disagree?

Only for NCAA who requires reporting of all defensive position changes. All other associations only require reporting of actual substitutions, and the DP playing defense for anyone other than the flex is not a substitution. The only reason a coach needs to report the DP playing pitcher or catcher is for courtesy runner eligibility.

Now that brings us to a conflict in the rules if as you say the DP cannot be listed with a defensive position on the field. ASA 4-3-E The DP may play any defensive position. Now, ASA 8-10-B, In the top of the 1st inning only, the pitcher and catcher are identified as those listed on the lineup as the pitcher and catcher.

So, the rules fully allow for the DP to play the pitching position, but the coach cannot designate them as so for courtesy runner priveleges in the top of the 1st inning?

Want to get the discussion back in line, forget reference to a particular position, that just brings extraneous argument and is just the result of people trying to outthink a particular rule..
