Trying to understand DP / FLEX - ASA

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by rfmnz » Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:14 am

Can someone share some basic information about the DP/Flex rule in ASA tournament play or point me in the direction of a video link (e.g. YouTube)?

This is the extent of my knowledge:

• DP - plays defense
• Flex - bats for DP
• Have to indicate DP and Flex player on official line up given to umpire

Some starter questions to get the conversations going:

○ Can the Flex swap with any girl on defense at any given time? If so, what are the limitations/allowances?
○ Defensive swap vs. Substitution?
○ Can Flex pinch run? Limitations?

Thanks!

Forget everything you know ...

1.) DP is listed in any of the first 9 positions on the line up card and bats for the FLEX
2.) FLEX is listed in the 10th position on the line up card and plays defense for the DP
3.) If the FLEX bats for the DP, the DP has left the game
4.) If the DP plays defense for the FLEX, then the FLEX has left the game - However, the DP can play defense for any of the other players on the field as long as they continue to bat ... Because both the FLEX and the DP may play defense at the same time, but can't play offense at the same time.
5.) The FLEX can run for only the DP, and the DP has left the game.

* Any time the DP has stopped playing offense or the FLEX has stopped playing defense, they have left the game ... Normal re entry rules apply.

If you do a search you will find it has been covered numerous times.

DP is an offensive (batting) position, but does have the ability to play defense.

Flex is a defensive only position and does not bat, must be out on defense.

The dp/flex option must be made known prior to the start of the game.

The dp may play defense for anyone but the flex and it is not a substitution. If they do play defense for the flex, the flex has left the game and it is considered a substitution.

The flex may only bat in the dp position. If they do, the dp has left the game and it is considered a substitution.

Both the dp and flex can be substituted for by any legal substitute.

The lineup can switch back and forth between 10 and 9 players any number ot times as long as there are legal substitutes.

Yes, the flex may pinch run for the dp, but again, if they do the dp has left the game and it is a substitution.

Go here and download the tutorial on lineup management. Lots of good info that you may/may not already know. Towards the back is a section on DP-FLex from the umpiring point of view but if you understand that, you won't commit an infraction and from there you can start to see how you can use the flexibility provided.
