The Umpire Corner

You make the call

MLB:
Begin with R1 stealing 2b.
R1 leaves early to steal third. Caught in rundown between 3b and 2b.
R2 steals second.
R1 retreats to 2b.
Fielder tags both men. Ump 2 clearly points at R2 and signals out.
R2 remains standing on second pleading case.
R1 heads for 1b dugout, realizes he is still safe and steals 1b.

You?
1) Wish you had not done your buddy a favor and switched so he could have Friday off.
2) Glance at your partner, hoping he is dumb enough to offer a call.
3) Realize you are in the middle of it now, and on an island by yourself. No matter the call, you better fully sell out on it. Point left fore-finger directly and convincingly at R2, shake your fist in the air and yell "your out!".

I had this happen (not exactly) in playoff softball HS game. The girl steals 2nd base and thinks that the batter hit a foul ball and goes make to 1st Base with no play on her. On the very next pitch she steals 2nd a second time and was safe.

Seeing it happen was even better.

That was the correct initial call. Problem was, in the process of calling Braun out, he missed the tag on Segura as he came off the bag... smh

Reminds me of Tim McClelland's brain fart in a 2009 playoff game between Angels and Yankees.

Well, you may have had an out for passing before anyone was tagged. The umpire also missed the out as the 2nd tag of Segura was while he was not in contact with the base.

If this were a softball game, when obvious all play was done, kill the ball & move R1 back to 2B as there is no provision for advancing in reverse.

The 1st base umpire should have called him out for coaches interference. Coach physically assisted him back to the bag at least twice while he was trying to go back to the dugout.

I went back and watched it again after watching it last night...it was only once but once is enough.

Umpire had called time before the coach physically stopped him from leaving the field.
