The Umpire Corner

How dumb can this umpire be?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

Daughter threw an inside fastball. Hit the knob of the bat, and dropped on the plate, then rolled forward. Strike right? Or at least fair ball? He awards batter the base, said HBP. Now, my daughter isn't the fastest pitcher out there, but I guarantee if a 12 year old girl was hit in the hand by a fastball, she would have shown it. When ball hit the knob, she didn't flinch, stood up straight and looked at the ump, as to say "what's the call?" Ump even went to BU for assistance, but he said he didn't see it. That was daughters only walk the entire day.

So in scorekeeping/stats, a HBP is considered a walk?

Dunno. How fast is your daughter's fastball? Then again, you think this could possibly be a strike. :?

It probably wasn't a matter of the umpire being dumb, but not seeing the ball hit the bat or hand and having to make a decision. I'm willing to bet the gut feeling was HBP and not finding anything definitive to counter that feeling (and obviously he looked for it if there was a conversation with the BU), the umpire went with that call.

You didn't say if your daughter fielded the ball and completed the play. Since you didn't mention it, I would assume that no one did much of anything except look at the umpire. Maybe if the defense gave the umpire something to work with here, but it doesn't sound like they did.

You didn't say if your daughter fielded the ball and completed the play. Catcher was fielding ball, when ump threw his hands up, yelled dead ball. Sorry I was clear.

Actually I wasnt strutting, but I could be 3-3, not 1 for 3.

Your mistake was not a botching of the rule, you simply lost track of outs, that can happen to anyone at anytime. So that is just a little jabbing because I thought it was funny. That is a little bit different than some blue simply not know what he is doing.

The other IF fly I actually disagree with you. it doesnt make you right and me wrong. We both know the rule, we just disagree about whether that ball being caught was routine. And since the wind was blowing, and the 1st baseman was moving back and 2nd was coming over, neither EVER got under the ball. Not until 1st actually caught the ball did I think it was getting caught as they didnt play it all that well. The ball was clearly behind the first baseman's head, not a pop up in front of her. I think that was not an INF, you disagree. Again, doesnt make you right, and doesnt make me wrong, just agree to disagree. In terms of that game, you were right because it was your game. Different blue, could have called it different.

or a HBP if it hits the batter first ;)

That's not a good thing. Hopefully, it wasn't more than just a brain fart.

Dumb would be the umpire telling you that he saw the ball hit the end of the bat, but he was going to rule it as a HBP because that was the rule as he saw it because everyone knows the bat is part of the hand. :D

I would dial back on the blue name calling on a play where he just failed to see something. From behind the catcher and the batter he didn't have a great view of what the ball hit. From what you've posted I think your kids relatively young and your going to see some of these blues over and over again, and that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you treat them.

Even if an umpire isn't very good at his job, you getting all over him isn't going to make them better or get things going your way any more than yelling at your kid in the batter's box can make them a better hitter on the next swing, in fact it's likely to have the opposite effect of what you desire.

However you treat the umpires is going to be mimic'd by your kid and if your a coach by your team. You don't want to raise a pitcher that gets steamed at the umpire every time a call doesn't go her way and leans on blaming the umpire for her inability to adjust to what blue is calling that day. Again I've never seen an umpire widen his strike zone because a 12yr old is having a hissy, in fact it may shrink.
