Okay here's the question. If a runner safe at first, runs through the bag, then while returning to first sees that no one is covering second, can she take second. This is assuming that she makes this move before returning to first. I've seen this happen a lot and it has always been allowed to stand. What is the rule?

Where is the ball when the runner breaks for 2nd? If the ball is in posession of the pitcher in the circle when the runner turns and starts to head back to 1st, the runner is commited to 1st and would be guilty of a lookback violation if they attempt to advance. If the runner has already turned and headed back to 1st prior to the ball being in the circle, they still have the option of attempting to advance to 2nd. If the ball isnt in the circle, runner can advance at any time.

NCAA is a little different. After overrunning 1st, until the runner has retouched 1st they can attempt to advance at any time, even if the ball is in the circle.
