Fielders Choice?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by Fastpitch4Life » Fri Jan 22, 2016 1:39 pm

Runners on 1st and 2nd. Batter hits line drive to 3rd. 3rd jumps and tips ball toward SS. SS throws to 3rd to get runner out. How is it scored for batter? What is the source of the rule?
Thanks!

Don't have my scoring manual handy - change the OP to a routine grounder to 3B that is muffed but deflected to the SS who was headed in that direction and continues on to force the runner headed to third. Scorer judges ordinary effort on the grounder, gives F5 the error - the batter is safe at first on an E5, or do we still have an FC in the scorebook?

It's still FC for the batter with no error for the fielder since a preceding runner was put out. If the error caused an unsuccessful attempt on the runner, it would still be FC for the batter and E5 would be recorded for how R1 reached 3B. Here are applicable NCAA scoring rules.

14.7 Fielder’s Choice
A fielder’s choice is credited in the following situations:
14.7.1 To a batter:
14.7.1.1 When a ground ball is put in play and any preceding base runner is out on the hit or would have been out had no error occurred.

14.21 Error
14.21.1 An error is charged against any fielder for each misplay (that is, fielding, wild throws, missed catches on good throws) that prolongs the life of a batter (causes one or more pitches to be thrown) or a base runner or permits a base runner to advance. This includes a dropped foul ball (unless it was allowed to drop intentionally to prevent a base runner from advancing), whether or not the batter subsequently is put out.

Also, no error is charged if you think they had a chance at a double play).

14.23.2 The second part of a double play never should be assumed. If an overthrow is made, no error is recorded unless the runner advances to another base. If the second throw is catchable and is dropped, an error is charged to the person receiving the throw.
