New rule this year. They can play in NQ's and states without the risk of losing their berth. Only bad thing is that they can take teams out. Other bad thing is, they can go 2 and Q going into Nationals and looks silly.

Anything can happen.

I guess you could argue that if you want to win you have to beat whoever they put against you but I agree it would suck if you get knocked out by a team that had nothing to gain or lose.

According to the So Cal ASA Yellow Book for State Tournament play. If a team has a berth to Nationals and want play in a NQ, they must forfiet their Berth. Page 38 of Yellow Book.

Sounds like the Yellow Book needs changing....

ASA Code - Article 513 National Qualifiers, Paragraph L.

Previously Qualified. Junior Olympic teams which have previously qualified for a National Championship Final may compete in other National Qualifiers. If a previously qualified team wins another berth from a National Qualifier, the highest finishing team without a berth will qualify.

If you read the opening statement at the top of page 38.
ASA Codes and Playing Rules will apply as outlined in the current ASA Offical Rules of Softball with the following Exceptions and Clarifications

The Yellow Book applies for SO Cal ASA only and if you have a Nat. Berth you have to give it up to play in a NQ.
Major conflict between the two books!

SoCal ASA doesn't have the authority to force the team to forfeit their berth. A team with a berth earned last year at ASA Western Nationals has every right to play in the tournament and can't be forced to forfeit the berth which SoCal ASA did not give them in the first place. ASA Code specifically allows teams to do it. It would be the equivalent on refusing to allow pick-up players for Nationals.

Here is JMHO of the 10u division as an outsider from Central Cal looking in, I have seen some of the "powerhouse" So Cal teams on 2 seperate occasions, the first time at an OC Batbusters friendly and the second time at the Fresno Force touney. First, I have to say that I have not seen a "super stud" but I have seen a few "better players", IMO, there is no "best player" in the 10u division. First I will start with CA, #00 is a really good player, I would have to say that she is a better fielder than a pitcher, she has speed and hits her spots, many of the girls have caught up to the speed throwers in this division and they are getting hit. I did see #00 throw well and beat Valley Tribe while at the OC Batbusters friendly. I think she is a really good fielder as she demonstrated at the Fresno Force tourney, she pretty much owns the middle infield and has a cannon for an arm, she also carries a big stick. I think CA's #7 is an outstanding pitcher, I have never seen ball movement from a 10 year old like this kid has, she also has just as much speed as any pitcher in the division, what makes her a cut above the rest is how she moves the ball around the plate and she throws hard, the first time I saw her was at the OC Batbusters friendly where she took it to our girls, what really impressed me was how she pitched on elimination Sunday at the Fresno Force tourney, she pitched well in game #1 against Valley Tribe (that was a good game) I ended up sitting right behind home plate at the championship game (game #4 for CA), CA vs OC Batbusters, again, #7 took the mound and continued where she left off throwing a lot of junk around the plate the entire game, I have to mention the nasty change-up this kid has, it is down right deadly, CA ended up beating OC Batbusters 10-4 in the championship game. It looked to me that the entire CA team can hit the ball, they have a good amount of power hitters too, their fielding is pretty solid as they made minimal errors, CA looks to be the team to beat in So Cal as they are the most complete from top to bottom, their winning record speaks for itself. TSB is a good team but they are missing something, they dont have solid pitching, their fielding is ok, they are aggressive with the bats, the one thing that stands out to me is the lack of smiles from the TSB camp, no smiles from the kids, parents or coaches, they look like they are not having fun. They do have one stand out player that I noticed, #25, their catcher, she had very minimal passed balls and when the rare one did get by, she was very quick to get the ball, you could not steal a base or lead off very far as she has a cannon and will throw you out, very impressive. she also has a big stick and once on base, she was very fast and would most likely cross home plate before you knew it. Nothing stands out about OC Batbusters except that they need to pick up a few strong players. Valley Tribe has 2 pitchers (#9 and #13) with speed, no ball movement and can get a little wild, they lack defense and sticks to be a top contender, heck, even the Sorcerers from up here beat them a few weeks back at the mothers day triple crown tourney. Cerritos Franchise has a few slappers who once their on base, will most likely cross home plate, nothing else that stands out. One team that is not mentioned but has potential is All American, great defense, aggressive with the bats, but their pitching is what kills them, if only the coach would stop trying to make his daughter a pitching star they might have a chance. I have to give a shout out to So Cal Crunch, they are a scrappy young team (like Fresno Force) and will be the top teams in the 10u division next year. I will not comment on any of the other teams as I have not seen them in person.
GOOD LUCK to all of the teams at state this weekend
I wonder if any of the teams will throw 1st place in fear of "the curse"?

WOW your hands must be tired from typing. I wasn't going to reply to his but thought better of it because of the comment against TSB, you are right on about CA and the players listed. We have played both teams multiple times, first CA coaches can really be very tough on the girls and 1 seems to yell sometimes when he does not need to. After saying that they really seem to do a great job, TSB I have witnessed are very positive to the girls pretty much all the time our parents have really discussed this as a group and like how they treat all the girls, they both seem to really know the game. We have seen both CA & TSB cut up with the girls which is why I wanted to respond about the no smiles in the camp. Also we have talked to some of the TSB parents, they all seem to like the no coaching from the stands rule (wish we had that) as this seems to keep the BS down to a minimum. As far as the other comments about the 10U div I agree with pretty much what you said. My opinion CA will be tough to beat, the only team that seems to compete with them on a regular bases is TSB. I do like # 00 better then the #7 as a pitcher.....also TSB does have a couple of girls that can pretty much shut most teams down just not over powering. Best athlete in 10U is #00 or #1 from AA ......JMHO

BB, AA's & Franchise .....maybe even VT will be tough at States. Next year Crunch will be on Top of the 10U

Wow sftballdad10u you must really love TSB! Always quick to defend them or start a positive string about their teams. Let some of the other teams and players have some of the spotlight and don't steal their thunder. If we didn't know any better we'd say you're a parent or maybe even a coach on the team? Couldn't be since you've lost to them plus nothing more pathetic than a grown man pretending to be someone else while pumping up his own players and team. Surely that isn't the case. Besides, their parents do seem a little "muzzled" at times. Either they don't enjoy it or are suppressed by the coaches. Who in the world calls it coaching from the stands in 10U! Everyone is cheering the team on, join the rest of the crowd TSB! There's a difference between coaching and yelling and maybe you're just missing it. JMHO :)
