UPDATED! 12u Top Team Ranking – Pre ASA Nationals Poll!

by upnin » Fri Oct 31, 2008 4:45 pm

:o I was told they returned 8 core players from their ASA Nationals team, then went out and added 6 more very good players from as far north as Santa Clarita to as far east as Phoenix, AZ.

This team is loaded, my DD plays for a 14U team and has played against them 2X already and got crushed both times! I would assume that's all they play is 14's friendlies
.

My guess is the six players they added are the core. F96 had no business at 12U nationals last year. They finished fourth in a qualifier and somehow got a berth than went 0-2.

I am confused at how a Firecrackers team that finished 49th at 2008 Nationals is being considered in the poll and many here as the best 12U in CA?

Our team (Comets) have seen (and beat them) Corona Angels in 2007 & seen them again in 2008, in which they finished a lot higher at this years Nationals than the Firecrackers..

We also seen, played them twice and beat them in 2007 Nationals, the California Rebels. With "red" pitching and good hitters, very good catcher, and sassy coach, I would put both the teams above Firecrackers..

So what am I missing? Has the Angel & Rebel loss some players, pitching not progressed as well as the Firecrackers?

I for one hope the top CA teams will be at the H.O.F Qualifier in 2009!

My understanding is that Rebels lost one player due to age..an outfielder..a sister or relative. Picked up a catcher from Firecrackers, a pitcher from Nemesis, and an outfielder from Franchise..all seem to be good adds from what I was told..I haven't seen Firecrackers this year..But in Vegas they were talking about the Fever pitchers and their crowhopping..Did the one that went to Firecrackers have an issue with that??? Do they call that much in 12 Under or is it a non-issue? What about at Nationals? Did they call many illegal pitches there at 12 Under this past year? Comets did you merge with someone or are you the same?

I saw several illegal pitches called at Nationals in 2008..Definately more so in 2008 than in 2007..

We (6 players) merged with Frost Falcons (TN) (5 players) that finished 13th at 2007 Nationals.. It is amazing what our two teams have put together, that I can't wait for to be seen on the National level. We improved in every aspect of the game, our weaknesses were their strong points and vice versa.

Funny hearing this team or that team with an ace or two and we have three Aces!!! :o So much speed, Power, defense, coaching and Heart..The team, coaches and parents are still figuring everything out, but getting stronger with each weekend.

For the past two Nationals we have been able to stay in our backyard. In 2009 we are looking forward to H.O.F, and actually traveling to Nationals... :D

Thanks for asking...

I think I can say everyone saw what they had earlier this year as a true 96 team and they were only missing a couple key players to put them over the top. Everyone in OC has heard they got some top players from a couple local teams and then added these ringers that are looking for a national title. This adds to the early prediction as the top team. I think only a few 12U have seen them, because they are playing up because they no there is not that much competition for them at the 12U level.

As too your question about the Angels & Rebels that can only be answered on the field they have not gotten as players as the firecrackers.

F96 must have picked up some good players. IMO the catcher that returned to the Rebels was the best player the Firecrackers had. The Firecrackers name and a little salesmanship will draw some top talent.

Firecrackers dropped some players (i.e. asked them to leave, politely I hear and others left for whatever reasons they had) and picked up several impact players, big hitters and pitchers. I watched them play at the HOF Qualifyer and their weakness is defense, particularly outfield. But when you can hit the ball as well as they do, an error or two hasn't made much difference at this point in the game and they should only get better as their new team gels.

CA'96 this past year attracted some good, solid players that competed at Nationals but who were not on the 10U team in 2007 - these kids were good adds, but some came just before States and one came for Nationals. This Winter they kept 11 core returners from Nationals and added two more solid players, one from Firecrackers and one from the Corona Angels '95 team, Nationals Champs. Although they are not the biggest team, they have the ability to hit 1 through 13 and are solid. They have main 3 pitchers (two who returned from 10U and the one from Victory USA 10U you might have seen) who rotate and share mound time just about equally plus two additional pitchers who step up when called upon. Yes, your team beat them 5-3 I think in a well-played game from both teams; but again, the team you played in 10U was not the same team you saw this past year when they finished much higher. Confidence has made much of the difference on this team, after playing OC Impact (Nationals Finalist) at States in an extrememly well-played game, (2-0 loss), this team turned it on when nobody thought they had a chance at all and they have kept the momentum moving forward..

PowerSurge also went out quickly at Nationals, but they are a VERY solid team all the way through; they too picked up several impact players and are strong. Jynx as well just needs another strong pitcher and they will have the ability to go the distance, they have strong defense, hitters and a top pitcher.

CA Rebels "Red" last year was fresh out of rec when they went to Nationals. This team is solid all the way through and with the mound experience gained over the course of 2008, they are stronger and with the return of their catcher ready to take on any 12U team from anywhere and give a great game.

I think what you have to remember with the California teams, Comet, is we have such a large pool of talent to select from you cannot really judge a team until they are looking you in the eye, on the dirt, at that moment. What you see at one tournament one year cannot be assumed will be seen again the following year, even the following two months especially after Nats. Who knows who will make a move in December/January or even April/May before States that will make all the difference in a team becoming a Nationals contender, or give a good team the edge needed to sneak up on the "big dogs" and take them by surprise leaving everyone to wonder "What the heck happened?!" :o

Peception is a strange thing. I cannot disagree more with the post that you need to go win friendlies to be the best in a tounament.

If you play your top 9 all year and win all of the friendlies, what happens if someone gets hurt? How do the others improve if they don't get friendly time? How do players improve with less at bats than the others?

I would not have my daughter play on a team that did not bat everyone or let everyone play in friendlies; it's just not smart softball and my daughter would be a starter on any team in the 12u division.

Friendlies are for PRACTICE. You play everyone; you practice your back ups (just in case you need them at Nationals). You improve EVERY player on your team bcause you are only as good as your weakest link.

Also, they are TWELVE. 12U should still be geared towards progression, improvement, and having fun. Clint Meyers had a wonderful speech last year about the fall: improve, practice and practice.
