Being a great player doesn't mean they've learned how to be a good coach or instructor. Naturally gifted players are typically the worst because they often don't know why they're so good. Players that had to learn how to play great are better prepared, however they mainly know what they had to overcome and what they did to improve.
Many/most former players can run students through the drills they used and not add much value beyond that. Real instructors learned over time to recognize what students are doing right/wrong and how to help them improve.
