IHSAA Rules on Hitting Instruction?

by BigDaddy77 » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:31 am

What are the rules on receiving hitting instruction for high school players? I've heard they cannot attend a lesson at the same time as any other high school player, even if they are from different schools?

I skimmed the participation rules on http://www.ihsaa.org and certainly don’t interpret this as being a rule, but I have heard from a few (maybe uninformed) that were very adamant that this rule is indeed in place.

This idea seems pretty stupid to me if the girls are in fact from different schools.

I'm battling this on the pitching end. Here's how it works...

IHSAA states in their by-Laws 15-1.1d, on page 45 that "Participation of students in an organized athletic competition with or against athletes not belonging to their school counts as one of contests for that season for that student. An organized “scrimmage” or practice with or against athletes not belonging to their school counts as one of contests for that season for that student."
In other words, IHSAA would count group pitching lessons with girls from different high schools as an organized competition and count it against the maximum number of games they are allowed to play in a season.

The person to talk to is Sandy Searcy (ssearcy@ihsaa.org). Maybe if she starts hearing from enough of us, they might consider changing the interpretation.

so the IHSAA, interprets an instructional session as an organized practice..! That is really a reach. We all know that 99% of a hitting/pitching lesson is individual instuction. Everyone should try to persuade them to re-think that one...!
