High school coaching

Slapper, Patches... You both have it tougher than I have it. You are expected to be successful. (measured by wins)

I assure you the only pressure I feel is self-induced. The LAST thing any AD wants to do is hire a Softball coach...OK, maybe a Tennis coach, but Softball coach is a close second.

I get your point Charley, lets have fun and play, and we'll all go to Dairy Queen when the game's over. But am I wrong to have expectations? Am I wrong to push to get everything I can out of them? Am I wrong to expect them to work hard, be focused, and ultimately play hard? We both know there's no million dollar contract at the end of this rainbow, but aren't what we're ultimately teaching are the same skills/tools they'll need to be successful young ladies?

I never said anything about having it "hard", we all face different challenges.

Slapper, my fault, I just assumed with a larger school you would get pressure from parents to win. Also, I think you must have taken me wrong, I feel every coach no matter what skill level of players or what level of competition needs to push their players to get the most out of them. I push them, challenge them, set goals and even chew their butts if I feel it is deserving or they need it. I just know that how I could coach a High School team full of travel ball players is much different that how I can coach my 15 girls. (although I am trying to change that) Since I help Mark with the 16u Gators I know what it is like to coach at that level too. I enjoy coaching both just in different ways.

Yea!! It's almost over! The High school season has destroyed more good players than usual! Some have pulled out of travel ball,some will never play school ball again! As senior night is celebrated the talk of destroyed dreams and his mistreatment will be talked about in the stands and dugouts!The truth of what team sports is about will never be learned by many girls because of the negative leadership of the coach. His lack of communication skills and unfairness will be a part of some girls lifelong memories of high school! No one can go talk to him because if they do they get shipped to JV or the bench! Don't mess with his kingdom or you are tossed out!The seniors will tell you..... if you love softball don't play for him......He will make you hate the game by your senior year! Truth from the class of 2012! Some people should not coach!!

HMMM, that's a tough one......your only alternative, maybe..DON"T PLAY!! You really may be doing the coach and other parents a favor by not having to listen to that BS all season

Spazsdad.........thought Tennessee had gentlemen? My daughter graduates this year 2012 so no one will have to listen to my views on the treatment or bullying I have witnessed this year! Good luck to the parents and players left behind!

I talked to a pretty successful college coach not long ago and she said that she hadn't seen a high school game in over 10 years. I think that there's good and bad coaches in both high school and travel ball, but when it's all said and done, it's a whole different ballgame so to speak. The best high school coach in the country might be able to win lots of games and even help continue the development of a player, but it's a different skill set than what you hope to see from a travel ball coach imo.

Travel coaches have as much pressure to make sure that their players are not only developing skills on the field, but also to keep those players in front of college coaches to really be successful.
