FACTS: ‘02 Gators thus far this season – 3 tourneys played – 3 championships (Gator Classic, Halloween @ the Quake, Monster Mash)
Record thus far in those 3 tourneys 17-2
12 Different Teams faced thus far: ’02 Hoosier Crush 2-1, ’02 Indy Edge 3-0, In Magic 1-0, Team Indiana 1-0, Indy Crush 2-0, Brownsburg Shockers 2-0, IN Terror 1-1, ’03 Gators 1-0, Red Mafia 1-0, Red Storm 1-0, IN Zephyrs 2-0, Edgewood Blaze 1-0.
Runs scored 165 (8.7 per game average) – Runs given up 53 (2.8 per game average)
Ranking10u – I think the score versus Mafia did reflect the game. Mafia pitched 3 different pitchers against us. First one gave up 4 runs, the second pitcher gave 1 run, and the third gave up 7 runs (might be a little off). Not sure which one was the #1 – sorry. As a team we batted .565 versus Mafia. OBP was .643. SLG was .870. We had 13 hits – 9 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Mafia pitchers (all 3 combined) had 3 walks and 0 strikeouts. Compare to our pitchers – gave up 0 walks, 9 hits (6 singles and 3 doubles) and had 8 strikeouts. Our pitchers threw 14 balls and 56 strikes. The meltdown you referred to I think came during the inning where we pounded the ball into the outfield. Though honestly, it seemed like we did that the entire game. Give credit where credit is due please. My girls hit the ball extremely well. My pitchers pitched extremely well and our defense with the exception of some normal 10u mistakes played very well!
It is 10u ball after all and mistakes do happen on both sides. The only thing I expect from my girls is to learn from them and get better.
I’m sorry the Mafia didn’t bring their A game versus the Zephyr. Mafia played them I believe in their first game on Sunday and lost. My girls played them in games #6 and #7 of the day and beat them 12-2 and 7-2. It was the Zephyrs 3rd and 4th game of the day.
On Saturday, the Edgewood Blaze was beating us but due to the rain, we were under a 60 minute drop dead scenario and thus the game reverted back to the previous inning in which we were leading. My hat goes off to the Blaze. They were pumped up and excited to play and they played well. As well, my hat goes off to the Terror. They beat us 4-3 Saturday night where we gave up a 3-1 lead but like I said before its 10u ball. However we did beat the Terror in game #5 on Sunday7- 4, leading the entire game.
Sunday morning my girls showed up at 7:30am to get ready for the first of what would be 7 games for the day. They left the park that evening around 7pm as 10u Moster Mash Champions after having done what most witnessed as an incredible feat! They played 7 back to back games and winning all games by a combined score of 71-20. We did it on the back of mostly 2 pitchers! We did it with the girls getting 5-15 minute breaks during each game. They finished it by beating the IN Zephyrs who not only were undefeated for the weekend but were playing with 12u players. They did it by run ruling them in the 1st game 12-2 and then finishing the job 7-2.
I’m not sure how many of you have witnessed a team doing something this incredible but having a ringside seat for that day I can only tell you that it was nothing short of spectacular! Those 9 and 10 year old girls displayed an incredible will of shear determination and heart by never once giving up!! They played their guts out that day! Words will never describe the shear joy, excitement, respect and pride I had for those 11 girls that day!! Oh and yes all 11 are ’02 players! This is my team for the entire season I am proud to say!
I don’t think it’s fair to make the comment that my team is not a “normal dominating gators team.” Not sure what that means, but I’ll assume you’re comparing us to the ’01 Gators. Nick is an incredible coach, and his girls are an incredible team. I watched them play every game in the ASA Nationals this past summer and it was truly amazing!!
In regards to your top 5 list “ranking10u” I don’t know how the Red Alert doesn’t make the top 5 list especially since they have already beaten one of your #1’s on your list. I don’t understand how the Edgewood Blaze is #4 on your list when they also beat your #1 on your list. Edgewood Blaze and Red Alert have both won an USFA tourney this fall over the Mafia who finished as the runner-up to both of them. I’m not trying to discount the Red Mafia. I know several of the parents and know their players by name. Elaine, Mallory, Shelby, Alex, McKenna are all great kids and very good players. The coaches are nice enough guys and I enjoy watching their team play. Of course given the top 2 finsh the the Zephyrs had this weekend I'd consider them as well. Rick has done an incredible job with putting this newly formed team and organization together and my hat goes off to him, the assistants, the parents and players for an exceptional start to their season!
Quickly before I end up writing a book here, whether or not we’re the best team in the state right now doesn’t interest me. I have great respect for the northern teams like the NWI Sox, Triple Crown Extreme and others I haven’t seen yet. I look forward to competing against them this coming season. I also have great respect for the ’02 Red Alert and Todd. I look forward to playing against his team. I noticed no one has mentioned the ’02 Indy Edge or the ’02 Hoosier Crush. Having played them, I can only tell you that they have great talent and good coaching. Both of those teams will do quite well this coming season.
This is fall ball, and I know last year at this time my first year team (’02 Gators) made up of 7, 8 and 9 year olds went 0-8. We got our a**s kicked up and down the field. But they continued to work during the fall and winter and by spring started to become a competitive team. I expect many teams this year will do the same this season and I look forward to the competition. Good competition only breeds more good teams!
All I ask is to not discount my girls. They earned it this past Sunday! Give them the respect that they have earned thus far.
