Just over a week away and how will you handle it !!!!

by bucketboy » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:41 pm

OK fellow bucketeers.

High school practce starts a week from Monday although conditioning and open gyms have been going on for some time now. How are you going to handle your DD's high school coach when they try to reteach them how to hit, throw, pitch etc...?

Are you just going to say nothing or will you schedule the meeting with the coach and/or the AD to address your concerns?

I am being told stories of high school coaches wanting to turn right handed power hitters with going yard power to lefty slappers because they are fast. Does any high school coach in their right mind think they can turn a kid to the other side of the plate and have them producing in 4 to 6 weeks? Don't you think their hitting coach would have done it years ago if it was a good idea? How about when DD's coach tells her to squish the bug, keep her weight back or my personal favorite and I quote "Your too worried about making your swing look pretty"

Memo to high school coaches that don't have a clue:

Leave your travel athletes alone and spend time with Susie Rec Ball so that when you put her in during the blow out she doesn't get killed. Take the money you get paid and invest it in going to the quality coaching clinics that are offered all winter. The parents of your travel players spend several thousand dollars a year to get them the quality instruction to make them better and don't need you to set them back ten steps with your cluelessness. Better yet why don't you take the time to go attend one of your travel players lessons and maybe just maybe you might learn something in the process.

Maybe we could clone Scott Hall, Jason Wise, Mike Baker et..al and send their clones to those schools that have those coaches that keep the scorebook from the 3rd base coaches box so parents wouldn't have to deal with all the nonsense and politics that goes on and the kids might have a more enjoyable experience.

In the infamous words of Dennis Miller "It's just my opinion folks, and I could be wrong"

I just sit back and watch. Dont really get too uptight. Lucky our coach doesnt reinvent the wheel, not enough time. Of course he has about 20 travel kids, so he doesnt have to do a lot.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to avoid publicly criticizing the coaches in these forums.

I just tell my daughter to smile and say ok coach. Then she continues to hit and pitch like her "REAL" coach has taught her! High school coach likes the results and never knows the difference.

And that is the sad part of it all. I have no clue where your dd goes to high school and I nailed it.

No public attacks on anyone here coolstuff just general statements of what happens when somebody gets a coaching job that isn't qualified for it. There are plenty out there that do a great job on top of the ones I already mentioned in my first post and those are the coaches that the 3rd base scorebook coaches should try to learn something from.

Last year we had the scorebook at third base, 30 minute practices coach. Helluva a nice guy, but the picture has been painted in the OP. This year we have a couple new coaches, a father/daughter combo. He has coached high school and travel in the past, and she has played D1 locally and coached a travel team last summer. They watched our Eclipse team play in a couple fall tournaments and recently watched a few arena ball sessions. They have been running some pretty intense conditioning(according to my daughter) along with tee work and live pitching(no swing instruction). The girls have really taken to a female coach. I believe our AD got this hire right. Refreshing. I do have a question, how often does everyones daughter work with a hitting instructor and average number of hits per week/day? This will be the first winter mine had not worked with an instructor. She(age 16) and I have worked on hitting throughout the winter(with me using/stealing what her instructors have done in the past). Swing looks good and she has hit well, although I may regret it if come summer it gets lost and I have to send the dogs out looking for it.

Mine hits with an instructor 2 nights a week. We go and hit another night and she has travel ball practice another night on top of that. She has also been playing the arena ball and getting cuts in. She takes a ton of cuts everytime she hits.
The instruction takes a huge load off of me, she absolutely believes in what is being said to her and taught to her, (Dad knows nothing!!)!!! And the instructor she has knows "how" to teach her and always gets the best out of her.
She is a little younger, so I think one of the biggest things she gets at the lessons is developing some relationships with the young ladies that are in the later years of high school ball. She has come to realize what it is going to take for her to play ball at the next level by working with and being pushed by these girls.
