It's cut day for most high school teams any news to share?

by bucketboy » Wed Mar 11, 2009 1:08 pm

We haven't had a new topic in awhile and I am sure that after the DD's get home tonight there will be some interesting news to share.

No cuts at my dd's high school and no JV either only 13 girls came out for softball so that makes the coaches job easy on that front.

Posted this news in another forum topic, so I'll repeat it here. DD (a freshman) made the first cut. I wasn't concerned but I was nervous as the HS doesn't have a freshman team and 20 freshman showed up. I wasn't sure if some travel ball players I didn't know about might show up. Turns out I know all the travel players who did show up, and most of the 20 were rec ball girls. The only question left is does she roster on varsity, JV or maybe both. Because she's a freshman, I don't see that as any big issue. Whatever roster she lands on is OK for this year.

I had to cut 2 12u today. I know its not high school but I didnt feel like starting a new thread. I've never had to call parents before and tell them their dd just didn't cut it....2 more friday. I Coach a 12u team that is selected from the local rec league. I have worked in car sales and Managed a dealership...I've told many many people no. This was tough! Is there a gentle way to do this?

Clay, those phone calls are among the toughest things associated with coaching at any level. My first year coaching 10u we had an open tryout and had 35 kids show up and I was looking for 7. I personally called each one of the parents of the players that we did not take; some were hurt, some mad, some were realistic and knew already and others thanked me for being honest. That was the LAST open tryout my team has ever held. As for the calls, make them quickly and be honest. Try to be positive and mention good traits of the player, but ultimately be honest in explaining why their daughter isn't a good fit for the team and how it is best for the team and the player to go different directions.
Bucketboy, our HS had 19 players and we do not cut......just ask what number they want!!!
At least we will have a JV team this year.

More details on tryouts. Seven out of 20 freshman made the first cut, but there will be more cuts, maybe two more, by the end of the week. A couple of freshmen who made it surprised me, they might be on the bubble. Only two seniors graduated from last year's state champion team - a pitcher and centerfielder. Heard comments from a current player about DD's speed, and suggestions she might be a varsity pinch runner or possibly in line for the open centerfield position. Just talk from the girls but sometimes that's what they're hearing.

I've known it was coming for a few weeks....but our varsity coach just told DD yesterday that she was in.

Nice to see her get so excited.

Me?.....I'm just relieved.

Last seasons JV experience was sheer torture. I understand that he wasn't able to pull her up to varsity as an 8th grader last year....but that was a completely wasted season.

Coach11, Do I understand your post correctly in that your daughter played JV softball as an 8th grader last year?

Yes. Shoulda/coulda played varsity, as those are the girls she's been playing with on the local travel team (16U), but our school doesn't allow MS students to play varsity.

Judging from some of your other posts you are from New York right? What grade can kids start playing JV sports there?

In Indiana 8th graders are not allowed to play varsity or JV sports. I think there may be an exception for the private schools that are not part of the IHSAA. I'm not sure on that one, but I am pretty sure that none of them would have softball.

True, but I have heard of 8th graders practicing with varsity and/or JV squads. Not sure if it was an official practice or an open gym.
