How much is too much? Three Middle School softball games during the week plus travel games on the weekends equals a lot pitches........Should the limit be 500 or 1000 pitches per week? I have been told the more different pitches the better to ease strain on the arm....Curve, drop, rise, screw, change up, fast ball.....

Depends on their training, their mechanics and their genetic luck.

I don't think you get stronger and better limiting your pitching practice. There IS an individual limit but I expect much of the damage comes when a kid who practices once or twice a week goes to a tourney and is used hard and long. You have to ramp up your endurance over time. You don't take a mile run once or twice a week and then enter a 10K. As you work up your endurance you find your limits. Unlucky genetics or bad mechanics and you can't work hard and long enough to develop the skill because your body quits on you first. So, it all depends. You have to find your own limits. Work up your endurance slowly over time as you figure out what your body can give you.

All this assumes good mechanics.

Over training by definition would be bad. Your training should support your game efforts. Some time off each year is too often missed. What is appropriate training depends on the factors mentioned earlier. What is certainly inappropriate is throwing thirty minutes twice a week and then throwing several games on the weekend.

Good news is you don't have to sell your house and move to another district to change teams
