I am pretty sure my mind is not failing me and the man with the salt and pepper hair coaching in Austin in 2002 was Richard Jorgensen.

Woodlands - Entering his sixth season. The woodlands history is listed below from their website.
Westlake High School - 3 years at JV and 1 year at varsity.

I agree with everything you said. Great facilities and talent pool. Connections with club teams. Too early to know if he is the best, but he knows how to coach.

In his first season as Head Coach at The Woodlands High School, Coach Jorgensen led the Lady Highlanders varsity team to a 25-5 record - best in school history - and was named District 14 Coach of the Year.

His second season was even better! Varsity finished with a 29-7 record - again best in school history - and was Bi-District champions in the playoffs!

In his third season, Varsity won its first District Championship in school history and finished with a 27-8 record as Regional Quarterfinalists in the state playoffs and was named District 14-5A Coach of the Year.

In his fourth season, the Highlanders went 21-12 and reached the Regional Quarter finals for the 3rd consecutive season.

In his fifth season, the Highlanders went 28-10. The Highlanders reached the state regional quarterfinals for the fourth straight season and won their second district title in three years. Jorgensen was named district 14-5A coach of the year. In 5 years at the helm , The Junior Varsity has an overall record of 113-11-2 and five straight district championships. The Highlander Varsity Team has an overall record of 132 -41 with four straight trips to the state regional quarterfinals and two district championships.

Coach Jorgensen has been teaching for 12 years. He ran the alternative education program for Eanes ISD for seven years. He is now teaching Honors Economics at TWHS. He is in his eighth year of coaching. He coached the Westlake JV Softball Team for three years. In his last season at Westlake, he was named Head Coach and took the team to their first playoff appearance in five years. Coach Jorgensen became Head Softball Coach of The Woodlands Highlanders prior to the start of 2004.

Well then...I've nothing more to say...

...except that there are many 1A, 2A, 3A coaches who are teaching kids without all the $$$, paid-for talent, 'spare no expense' mentality...that are truly "the best HS coaches in Texas".

6 at Woodlands, 4 at Westlake. I have had a couple of kids in high school ball in several districts. This is coming to a close but it was fun. Do you have something against Richard?

He's starting his sixth year at WHS, 3 of the 4 years as the JV coach at Westlake. Jorgie's a good guy, but like any coach at Woodlands, Katy, Westlake, Plano, Smithfield, Southlake...they've inherited first class programs, facilities, equipment, and kids who have seen nothing but the best in training, lessons, club ball, etc. Jorgie's done an excellent job of assembling a group of club players and then getting the hell out of the way. Come talk to me when and if he gets a state title.

On the other hand, there are some coaches in South Texas who show up the first day at tryouts with their lawnmower to cut out a diamond of a pasture for their field each January. A handful of these guys truly develop young girls into athletes and D1 softball players...See Rudy Aguilar in Mission, Texas. No doubt..this guy's one of the best!

First class facilities? The last time I was there, the Woodlands didn't have a bathroom within sprinting distance of the field. When you got there, you had better take care of "business" before the game started and pray that the sandwich that you devored on the way to the game didn't cause you any problems because you can't go between innings! This may have changed since the last time I was there.

If I remember correctly, the field was nice but after the game, Jorgensen would "manicure" the infield with a lawnmower and a metal screen he would drag behind it. That's first class?

He is a first class coach that gets the most out of his kids. I have seen them in scrimmages this year and as usual they looked good. I have yet to see him field a sub par team. The year before he got to the Woodlands, they were horrible. The attitudes and expectations of his players were 100% different there during his first year than they were the year before he got therre.
