FB, DD and Coaches

by sward » Mon May 21, 2012 7:05 am

I understand that kids are going to use FB and twitter, but what do you feel is the role in recruiting kids to other teams / organizations. What would your response be as a parent when you discover a coach is A) wanting to be friends with your DD or B) Sending PM's to recruit or C) Both. Any/All of this without involvement of the parents. I have seen a few of these types of things with my DD's and her friends, what should our involvement be as parents (since we have to pay the bills). I can understand players being friends as they have a lot more in common than a 40yo man and a lot of the girls have common friends. What age do you feel it is OK, to start bypassing the parents? 14U, 16U, 18U (I know it depends on the trust you have with your DD too).

Is this better than hanging out at a tourny and talking to players and parents in the stands or trying to poach someone as they leave the park, or does it make it easier because it's online.

Just a little monday morning conversation to get things moving.

It is not appropriate for a coach to talk to a player by any means, FB or otherwise without the parent's knowledge. This of course depends on the age. A high school senior is essentially an adult and free to make those decisions on her own. A 14U 8th grader however, is not.

As long as your child is underage then it is NOT acceptable. If a coach wants to recruit a kid, talk to the parents first.
