Is the organization Houston Independent Teams still around? They had some good tournaments with early teams like Illusions, Shadows, Challengers, Houstonaires and....

Well now you have certainly dated yourself with that question. Brought back a lot of good memories.

HIT (Houston Independent Teams) was started as a way to get around some of the politics in the Houston Metro area at that time. I don't believe that a kid down there was allowed to play on a team out of her county.

While we also had some politics involved as well up here in the DFW area, we were able to utilize something called a borderline release allowing a kid to cross counties to play on a team.

Don't forget about the Thunderbirds and Coach Wiley Douglass! We rocked!

Such good memories...that's back when only the best of the best played select and the rest stayed with league and all stars. Now the talent is so watered down because "everyone" is select.

Along the lines of "old times" it was good to find that Deepwater Girl's Softball is still going in Pasadena. It was started in 1962. Of course the entire Pasadena softball community was fortunate to have a mayor that played the game for many years, John Ray Harrison.

I played with John Ray, his brother Ben and all of his son's. John Ray and Ben could not get along together, but both were great people. That was a long time ago. Fogo field was the hot spot for men's fastpitch back then. I only ever hit one home run (over the fence) and it was on that field. One of John Ray's son's DD plays for the Rattlers.

Was that the same softball organization that started out at the Deepwater Little League fields next to the Beltway? I remember growing up there and they had on field dedicated to softball. I think the eventually moved and I am guessing it was over to the Pasadena Deepwater complex that exists today.

For a couple of years in the mid 80's Deepwater girls did play at the Beltway 8 field. Some thought it was quite a feat to get that field. Tulie Stansel made a few calls to make introductions and vouch for us.

Fogo is a field with lots of fastpitch history. Don't forget Satsuma off of Red Bluff and the field by the PAL gym in later years. They may not have as much history as Houston Memorial #1 but, still they are special.

Just to jog some more memories, the Baytown Hawks are still in business. Lots of great players still come to pay homage to BeBe. This is about year 52 for the team.

thanks for the response. As a kid we used to jump on that field and play a little home run derby. Of course if you went yard and hit the gym, you were a stud. We used to play at Satsuma and of course the fields next to PAL gym as well.
