Contrary to what your high school English teacher told you, there's no reason not to begin a sentence with but or and; in fact, these words often make a sentence more forceful and graceful. They are almost always better than beginning with however or additionally. Beginning with but or and does make your writing less formal; — but worse things could happen to most writing than becoming less formal.

Perhaps you should stick to your area of expertise, such as...umm...well, I'm at a loss on that one...

Thanks for enlightening me. I don't know what I was thinking to ever consider doubting your authority. Thank you for making it painfully obvious to me and everyone else on HB that you like to start with the but. You have confirmed a lot suspicion here deep in the heart of TX.

See I too can resort to a weak mind and choose to use gay emoticons when I possess the inability to articulate a coherent thought.

GAME OVER

Hey, just to show there are no hard feelings, I would like to share with all of you this heart-warming story about my new friend during his days at Rutgers.

Skarp was walking on campus one day when his friend, Hotwheels, another nerd, rode up on an incredible shiny new bicycle.

Skarp was stunned and asked, "But where did you get such a nice bike?" (Yes it seems he was really into but back then as well)

Hotwheels replied, "Well, yesterday I was walking home minding my own business just putting gel in my hair when the SiberianQueen rode up to me on this bike.

She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want!'"

Skarp nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't have fit."

GAME OVER

Augie, I really don't know what to make of your demeaning, holier than thou-pious attitude you spew forth in this thread. Then, to make matters worse, all of your little buddies chime in hoping they might score some brownie points and get to sit next to you at The Burger Hole. I am just some average Joe trying to make a few salient points in a sea of buffoonery. I am confused though. Your first post eloquently and succinctly stated there was no need for me to apologize for the long read because a man of your educational acumen had no time to even finish reading my overly verbose first paragraph. As well as anybody else for that matter. However, you then take it upon yourself to grab that overly-used little red pen of yours and grade the rest of my posts as if my English Lit term paper determined whether I would pass or fail. It seems that you get a little defensive when anybody tries to play in your sand box that is enlightened posts. Why the hostility? Did I come on here and proclaim to be the next McLovin and attempt to steal your spotlight?

You then proceed to state the obvious, at least to those with an inkling of ability to read and comprehend, that "my definition" of extenuating circumstances actually belonged to Mr. Wikipedia. Well done sir. Truly it took someone with immense intelligence to figure out that was "plagiarized" and in fact not my own words. Really, what gave it away? Was it my use of "moral opprobrium" that sealed the deal? In fact, I can scarcely believe that you did not pick up on my additional plagiarism in the next paragraph when I referenced defamation. I thought for sure you would have picked up on the fact that I used a footnote in the middle of my definition as an obvious give-away.

I do not know Mr. Hotwheels but I must confess that I have this mental picture of the stereotypical meathead jock in all of those B movies. I mean anyone who replies to a post with "Game Over" must be wearing a popped-collar pink shirt that is 2 sizes too small and has a barb-wire tatt on his roided out bicep.

I must retire now. I have another fifth of vodka to finish off and I still need to finish reading 'Grammar for Dummies' before I pass out. Before I go, I would like to leave you all with a few mind vitamins. In the spirit of everything Skarp, I would also like to quote the great American Mark Twain, "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure." By the way, while everyone has out their red grading pens please be sure to revisit the rules for starting a sentence with And, But or Because. If I remember correctly from my earlier learning days, I believe these words are used primarily to join two independent phrases together and create a relationship between them.

"But try to write like a condescending English professor with that 8th-grade education and folks on here are apt to put you at the head of the idiot class."

Finally, and I really mean it this time, I want to dedicate this link to my good friend, Jaquesy, err I mean Skarp, err I mean McLovin, err I mean Augie. It seems that not only does Skarp have ample time to peruse the TX boards of HB (explain to me again why all of you CA people are trolling the TX boards again), but he also has time to blog under the pseudonym of Jaquesy.

Average Joe? I thought your name was Jose?

Wikipedia and then Mark Twain quotes??? What board do you think you’re on here… the polo club? I mean, this is a softball board and I too would like to quote the great Mexican Pancho Villa…”f#@k you amigo?”

How’s that for buffoonery?

GAME OVER... WHEN I DECIDE IT'S OVER

My match in terms of what...being a class-A jackass? I'll give you that. As far as everything else goes, yeah...not so much.

He can sure use the hell out of a thesaurus though.

ok, let me get this straight:

I call someone (who is obviously hiding behind a 2nd screen name) a "drunk hillbilly d!(k", and i get all kind of complaints...enough that the admins have to remove the "d!(k" from the post, and leave it just "drunk hillbilly"...
yet you let this d0u(h3 bag grandmaster idiot post away, and no one says anything?

wow, either everyone has him/her/shim on ignore, or I guess I just don't understand the thinking of people from your great state...

Art, it's all about the artistic value of the post. The GM idiot is obviously from the wrong side of the tracks, so his posts, although obscene, are not removed because of the underlying message of hope and change for the under-privileged and outcast.

Your posts on the other hand...

... are just porn.
