ASA Southern Qualifier - Dave Devine

by TexasYellowBall » Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:05 pm

We seem to complain, but hardly give kudos when they are due.......

I want to thank Dave Devine on hosting a well run tournament last weekend at Heritage Park and Keist Park. Dave and his staff of workers and umpires worked hard to keep the tournament smooth and on time.

tournamentmvp.com worked great is a valuable addition to championship softball.

Great Job by All.....

I will echo the compliment, especially about Tournamentmvp - even though a few scores were entered incorrectly it was a really nice thing to have.

Only gripe is that due to the rain delay at Kiest, the final games on Friday ended well after 1AM on Saturday. It didn't have to be that way, there were available fields to play the last games on but it took quite an effort to get the tournament officials to grant permission to move the last game to an available field instead of waiting for the prior game to end on the scheduled field. This could have been handled better. Otherwise, a well run tourney.

I thought the tournament ran smoothly, the updates were timely on tournamentasa.

My only gripe would be the fact that the fields were so far apart, I know it didn't affect many, but I noticed on the bracket that one team lost a game 5pm game on Friday at Heritage and had to play again at 9pm at Keist. It took an hour to get from one field to the other without traffic, I can't imagine how long it took at 6:30 on Friday. The distance also hurt the coaches moving from park to park. I know of a few coaches that stayed at Heritage all weekend. If your games were at Keist, you definitely had less coaches in attendance.

It was run well. That being said. No water in the dug outs? whats up with that? Also, had a friend in DFW that wanted to bring his DD and 3 of her friends from her 12-U team to see one game.. 40.00 bucks to get in? They did not come and I cant blame him. Gate fee's do turn some people(kids) away.

14 and under were free to get in and a one day pass was only $5, so at the most it would have cost $20 for all of them, bul like I said, if they were 12U it would have cost your friend $5 to get in and everyone else was free.

Would of been nice to know. I saw no signs indicationg this at the enterance. I did not have a problem paying it for me to get in. But still no one has addressed the water issue? Heritige is a very nice park and nice area, Kiest, is a nice park bad area. went to watch a 11 P.M. friday game and well lets just say I didnt like that we had to stop for fuel. Like I said. Well ran, nice parks. Water is an issue , our team went thru, at a minimum of 2 cases per game plus ice. 7.5/8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Water was at Keist, no water at Heritage.

We were told this in the flyer and at the coaches meeting. City of Plano runs Heritage and never provides water in the dugouts. The tournament director has no say in this situation, at least that is what he said in the meeting. He also said in the meeting that team coolers were allowed and encouraged. A coach asked during the meeting if parents were allowed to bring in coolers and he said "not by the City of Plano rules, but just say they are team coolers if a Plano workers askes"....Our team had atleast 5 coolers at each game.

At Heritage, they gave us no option on paying for a day pass only the weekend pass. I kind of figured that way they wouldn't have to be there on Sunday collecting, and I guess I was right. No admission on Sunday

My father in law got a one day at Heritage on Saturday. You just had to ask.

Very well run tourney for over 100 teams. Would have liked less back and forth but that may have required a serious phd in scheduling like the military has in their large scale operations. I suppose under ASA policy they did not want two pools producing their own bids, they wanted all teams theoretically interacting with each other in the bracket.

Each facility has their own water rules. I would prefer a $5 gate fee per day and free entry of coolers over no coolers because in hot weather our players were going through 2 drinks per game each.

Overall umpiring was solid. Thanks Dave Devine
