Team Classifications

by mstree323 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 6:14 am

i'm sure it's been discussed, but i've always wondered why it's not run like run dog trials. Use points, and make B like the qualifying, open like open, and A like special stakes. Only it starts over in every age.

you can only play b until you've won 3 or got 12 points or something.

everybody can play open

to play A you have to have Q'd out or placed in an open.

once you've got 15 open points you get the AFC title (awesome freakin club instead of amateur field champion), and you can use it in your tryout posts "AFC 96 Slappin Sallies looking for a bracket pitcher and shortstop".

seems better than trying to decide who's a rec team or district residence or making odd age(11,13,15) groups by saying all second year teams have to be A.

ASA already has a point system in place. North Texas or State JO's dont abide by it ...period.

is it just a matter of manpower or information or what?

what are the point rules? ive heard all kind of schemes from people in different areas and districts, but nothing as straightforward as 12 points and you gotta go or something.

seems like if everyone knew the point systems the TD's usually know enough about the teams. and if everyone knew em, people would be real unlikely to try to cheat. might actually keep people from just trying to pickup players and force themselves into stakes they cant really run.

This has gotten beat to death already, who really cares about classification anyways??
The girls could care less IMO, it is only the parents who complain, if you want a level playing field go to your local rec league otherwise play ball and zip it

I think you are missing the point SoftballG. What about the rec tournament or all star teams. You expect them to go play against teams that are sandbagging and playing "B" when they should be playing "A". How do you think that is fair? If you are on a team that plays select, then you are supposed to be the best of the best, that is why you are a SELECT team. That is why when a team signs up with ASA it is automatically an "A" team unless you are a rec team or rec all-star team. You must have been the bully growing up, since you obviously like picking on the smaller kids.

I can see both sides of this discussion.

All stars and league teams normaly have their own tournaments.

And just because a team calls themselves select does not mean they are the 'best of the best'. I know some so called 'select' teams that have never won a tournament or if they did it was against all star teams. I guess you could call that sandbagging. One could also call it 'Wannabe select' The top teams ( there are only a few) could be called a 'true select team'. And yes some of them play in weaker tournaments. Bottom line is find a strong team if you can and play stronger teams or get beat up pretending to be select. Classification comes if you qualify for that big tournament. :D

It is simple. It's like the age groups 8u 10u 12u etc etc. You can play up but you cannot play down.

If you have registered/classified as a SELECT A TEAM then you cannot play down in B tournments. B teams can play up if they so choose.
Classifications: Select A - ALL SECOND YEAR PLAYERS IN AN AGE GROUP. That means if you have 1 or more second year players then you are an A team.

Select B - ALL FIRST YEAR PLAYERS WITHIN AN AGE GROUP. That will build the teams for Select A in their second year. If B wants to play up To A to play better teams more power to them.

Why do we try to make things so difficult. All the girls want to do is play ball. We as parents and coaches should help them succeed in acomplishing that.

my point is that if you just say second year team are all A team, your'e really just making an extra age division?

it shouldnt be that hard to let performance sort it out i wouldnt think.

then again, iv'e ran way more dogs than ive had daughters.

when i was young i played more tennis and basketball, but i cant imagine ever bitchin about a draw just because krickstien or chang was in it.

wasnt their fault i couldnt get to em to beat their ass.

It would be easier to just adopt the California system. If you play rec ball you are B, if you play travel you are A. No points, no complaints, no issues.
To each their own.

You mean, the california system where if you play travel up till a certain date, then go play rec league , you can play B with A level players?

Or the Texas system where anything goes?
