As a casual observer and without any real opinion on the matter, let me offer an unbiased summary...

VTD - C+

They were abruptly dropped like a lead weight by ASA and Allen Richardson, fighting for survival, managed to scratch and claw back from the dead. He was able to tap into some deep-seated resentment of the established old guard in the DFW area by securing some of the nicer, well-managed softball parks in the Metroplex for VTD tournaments. A good start indeed, but a long way to go and much work to be done. Softball is much more than DFW and if VTD doesn't make more headway very soon VTD's survival will be in doubt. Their national tournament in July in DFW where temps will reach 100+ everyday could be a mistake. Yes, some of the locals will show up, but for the long term...ASA is still the big dog and VTD would be better off following USFA's plan...A big tournament with some beach thrown in...albeit oily this year. Younger teams especially don't mind mixing their softball with some vacation time. Until VTD becomes relevant nationally, they should provide some other form of entertainment other than baking in the Texas heat in the middle of July (see Colorado) . They have some good people and parks on their side, but they should beware of the "big di#k" syndrome...thinking they can control everyone while not listening to complaints.

ASA - D-

Has anyone heard "PR Disaster"? The fact that ASA was late in putting the website together and then throwing out one of the most user-unfriendly sites ever in the history of the PC is simply amazing. ASA's history and long-established, entrenched structure probably means it will survive. But instead of just surviving and growing, they let some of the weaklings get up off the ground. Premier, USFA, VTD, USSSA are all easy pickings if only ASA had listened. Locally, nothing much gets better. DallasASA put together a decent website but still directs you to the ASA abortion. FW the same. I've heard that Big D from the eastside was at the VTD organizational meetings in late 2009, but opted to stay with the old guard...one that he publically trashed through the years. His efforts are admirable, but unless he secures a better park than the old 'has been' where he's at... teams, players, and families will seek nicer digs such as Allen, McKinney, SL, NRH, Keller. He would be wise to get the city to drop about 100k to upgrade what once was the place to play. On the westside...what can I say? The thought of GG sitting around on weekends with nothing to do...has me (and numerous others) tickled pink. The City of Fort Worth should have allowed the fires to burn the place down a few years ago when they started the fireworks grass fires. The place is a dump..and GG is the poster child of ASA old farts that are way past their usefullness.

Both have work to do...but in the long run...players and their families have choices...and a little competition will usually lead one or both to rise to the top.

Wow Joe very impressive! It was in fact this post that brought me back to the bucket. I have sat here and read posts for a few weeks now and kept quiet knowing there is no point served in dueling posts with a 3 year old like yourself. Like Honcho I was pleasantly surprised with your thoughtful post. Of course I was not surprised that VTD scored higher than ASA ;)

Some of the comments you made about VTD were the exact same ones I have been making with you for over a month now. And yes you bring up some valid points about ASA. So without getting into another 3 page argument about the virtues of VTD or ASA I would like to make the following comments without trying to incite a riot.

I too find it somewhat laughable that VTD is having their Nationals in Tarrant County where temps in late July will most likely be hovering near or above 100 degrees. I find it truly funny that we are less than 1 month away from the biggest tournament in VTD history and there is NO info about the tournament anywhere. Sure you know what park the tourney will be played at (unless you are 1 of the 17 teams playing in the 10U Open and then you only know you are playing in DFW somewhere). Also you know the dates for the tournament. In addition you know opening ceremonies will be at the Ballpark in Arlington. But I bet not everyone knows there is NO Ranger game that evening. In fact, I'll bet that at least half of those teams attending, are under the assumption there is a Ranger game that evening. This is VTD's first ever National tournament and you only get one shot to make a good first impression. With the lack of info, scheduling and planning that appears to be going on I would be concerned. Now of course all this is only relevant if VTD is truly trying to become a legitimate threat to ASA or USFA or PGF or whomever. However, if their true motivation is solely about the dollar, then they have little to fear.

I have mentioned this before, but I have to repeat it again: How seriously can you take a National tournament when the check is made payable to a local softball team and their manager, who just happens to be a VTD commish. This is just completely bush league in my opinion. I think it should also be noted that I dont think there is any coincidence that he is also in charge of the 10U Open and they have yet to secure a location, or at least make it known to the public.

Now on to ASA. Their website is a complete joke! I also feel like you have a conflict of interest within ASA as well. I believe most VTD officers are coaches for a team under their jurisdiction...not very ethical if you ask me. However, the Dallas ASA JO is a top dog with a prominent Tarrant County club. Regardless of affiliation, all of this reeks with conflict of interest. ASA has also not done a good enough job with their tournament formats and pricing. They could take a page from the VTD playbook.

In the end, in my own personal opinion, all of this boils down to a website. VTD has had their big beautiful efficient website running for years now. It is the only website all of us in DFW have known for the past several years. Dallas ASA & FW ASA have terrible websites that are not user friendly. There is no contest here. Period, end of discussion. It is for this simple reason that VTD has tournaments every weekend. It has nothing to do with what rules you are going to play by or what umpire is going to be behind the plate or who the TD is. However, when it comes to caliber of play and National Championships, there is no comparison between the two either. Period, end of discussion.

I'm pretty sure it's a breach of some kind to say that twice in the same post.
