Former University of Texas Stars Start Their Own Club

What $200 a month?! Now that is crazy, why pay $200 a month to proven top tier athlete/coach when I can pay $150 for a Dad who has 5 hours of online training and a certificate he printed out himself. Truly insane, on one hand there you have a staff with experience training and competing on the highest levels and on the other a guy who has watched plenty of games from the recliner, seen snippets of practice on youtube and checkout 3 books from the library on “Coaching Softball”.

Now don’t get me wrong there are plenty of Solid dad/mom coaches out there, but there are just as many running clubs asking $150 a month (and getting it) that don’t even compare to the talented staff shown here.

Doesnt seem excessive to me. No mom/pop coaching. Coaches with extensive experience with tournament and college ball. Sounds like 50$ extra per month could be priceless.

Took my DD out this weekend and the tryout was one of the most organized and efficient tryouts I have ever been too. Seems these women have success in the near future, and for the amount being paid, considering it is a non-profit team, with 501c forms already registered, doesn't seem for profit to me. You get what you pay for. I will pay ...

So, no one is getting paid? Just because the organization is "Non-Profit" doesn't mean that some one isn't getting their share. $150 a month, it would not have raised an eyebrow with me and we would have signed on the dotted line. $300 down and $200 a month, not including uniforms, and no set practice facility, it was not a good deal for us.

$150 a month for a daddy ball, not a good deal either.

Actually, we went to the tryouts this weekend as well....they were VERY well organized, the numbers weren't huge, but the talent level seemed to be very good and the former players were very good with the girls with most giving tips and such during the tryout itself. I think that speaks to the 'coachability' of a player if they can adapt and perform. I know a bunch of other orgs had tryouts this last weekend as well and I don't know what kind of numbers they drew. It seems like everyone is having makeups in the next week.

They did discuss the money involved and the $300 up front covers uniforms, helmets, bags, ASA insurance, etc. (all your basic startup costs). They have a dedicated practice field that will be ready September 1st in the same complex as the tryouts were held. The monthlies don't seem all that high when you consider the paid coaches, the practice field and the conditioning trainer attached to the organization. I've always thought that most orgs don't work enough on the conditioning side...maybe this is the change that makes this group better than the rest.

We asked a bunch of questions after the practice about the former players and they answered everything with a smile. It seems to be a very legit organization at this point without the daddy ball crap that seems to exist in most of the other orgs in this part of the state.

Just my 2 cents.

Softball costs all depend on what you are getting. $300 plus $200 a month could be very reasonable if it included a weekly 30 min batting lesson. Or if you travel to rising star, NJ, PA, and LV tourneys. But for the most part, there is not alot of $ profit in softball. Select volleyball at $4K, yes. But not $1300-$2000 that most teams charge per year. Tourneys are expensive, travel and hotel for coaches are going up. So if Platinum stays local, it is too much. If they travel to Houston and Dallas and further, it would probably be in the realm of reasonable. To get better quickly, they need to get out of Seguin and San marcos. Bombers and Blaze are a bargain for the kids who made it to ASA A Nationals for half this cost.

Everyone stop the money thing.Anyone that plays true travel ball spends thousands of dollars each year.
If money is that big of an issue then maybe you should stay in your own back yard and play league ball.
My daughter has played on fully funded teams.
Teams that had dues
None of that compares to the time off work,motels,fuel,4.00 dollar hotdogs, private lessons, bats, gloves & equipment we all most likley are spending.
Bottom line if you are going to put a dollar figure on your dd's softball bussiness " thats what it is dont' fool youself" then maybe find something else to do. stop whining!!!!!

Stix, Blaze, Storm and I think Bombers have college coaches coaching their teams. Their dues are less and are non-profits too. If anything........they're just helping in watering down the teams in the area. To many quality kids spread out amongst 4 programs just in the Austin Area. Why didn't they try to get involved with one of the current programs? I'm sure they would have listened. It's gonna be hard getting a 16u team into big tournaments and also getting good teams to play ya. 16u isn't big in this state. I wish them good luck, but stating they're above and beyond better.......that's just crazy, really. All four current programs have put plenty of kids in to college, good colleges like Texas, LSU, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, UTSA, ULL, Texas State....etc. So to say Platinum is the next level, the next best thing.......you'd be dumb to fall for that. Your kid will grow in any of these programs.......oh, there isn't a $50 difference between the programs. Time will tell........but don't fall for the hype. Do your research....look at their programs accomplishments, their coaches qualifactions. I don't think Coach Candrea (Arizona/USA), Coach Patrick Murphy (Alabama), Coach Michael Lotief (ULL), and Coach Jay Miller (Miss St/USA) played women's fastpitch softball. You can learn from someone that has played fastpitch softball.
