Have you looked at her lately? Notice those wires coming from her ears 24/7? Walk by her room at any given point...do you hear silence or is there always music in the background? Music is a part of EVERYTHING they do.

You appear to be eager to talk down to people and come off as the voice of impeccable reason and taste, well qualified to tell others what they should think/do. Have it your way.

Is it appropriate for the music-immersed young person at home to blast the music that is so integral to their very being, to the point where it annoys the neighbors? For them to enjoy this life sustaining medium, should they do so without any regard for others? Does the universe revolve around “the girls” (apparently the fulcrum of all your cosmic pronouncements) on the field to the point of complete disregard for other life forms? Not my universe. In my universe, "the girls" are still members of society even at the fields. I guess that makes me the screwed up “engineer.” I teach my kids, by word and example, respect and concern for the feelings of others. And if they for one moment believe that they can act with impunity when something is as important to them as music, I remind them that they live in a civilized society inhabited by others of their species who deserve every bit as much regard as they themselves. So rotor around your child-God and her teammates. Expect everyone else to defer to your grand vision and be grateful for your generosity in sharing it with us less fortunate ones.

A suggestion: Before you judge the ability of others to comprehend the written word, take a refresher course at the local elementary school. The objections in this thread are not about the use of boom boxes in a respectful way. No one gives a Shit about whether your little precious or her teammates or anyone else plays music in a manner that conforms with common sense behavior exhibited by the vast majority of the people in this society. Continue to defend against the attack you clearly misperceive.

And for the sake of clarity, my previously posted lack of interest had to do with not caring to educate you about how to reason about things below the painfully obvious surface (Uhhhh one thing is entertainment and the other is about safety - Thanx Mrs. Hawking), and do so with at least cursory awareness of the value of consistency when applying stated principles. I'll leave that for another elementary school teacher. I don't know where you might turn for help with cursory awareness in general.

I look forward to another enlightening post from you which will surely enrich my life and show everyone the path to right-minded thinking.

John

Oh, I apologize for having offended your sensibilities. However, did you happen to look at the Subject of this entire thread "Boom Boxes at Softball tournaments. TD's Outlaw them."?????

Simply stating my thoughts as the rest of the chest thumping, testosterone laden, acerbic group of the few that seem to rule this site do. BTW, nice use of a thesaurus and...

Yeah, well, you'll have to excuse me...I'm well known on here for my lack of facility with the language. I look forward to your assistance with that.

REALLY...is that the only thing you could come up with? A bash on my one misspelled word? Deal with the topic, please do not deflect your feelings of inadequacy to my editing skills to make yourself feel better and superior.

I never said a word about your misspelled word, you moron. If I was going to pick on your language (much less your reasoning skills), believe me, it would be a target-rich environment.

Feelings of inadequacy? Ummm, okay. The only one getting personal (e.g., "go to a library and learn to read") was you. In fact, I have been dealing with the topic, and have raised several points that you have failed to address. To wit: if it's "about the girls," what is your response to the large number of girls who are there to play softball, not to listen to crappy music chosen by the most ghetto team in attendance? Is it not "about" them too? I promise you that my kid doesn't want to listen to your trailer-park crap. But screw her, right?

As far as learning to read goes, I was responding directly to the comments you made about music played at a high volume (your characterization, not mine). Your suggested response: request that it be turned down, and shame on anyone who doesn't. My analysis: if you need to be told to turn your music down, you are an unmitigated jackass. Of course, you've already demonstrated yourself to be an unmitigated jackass in this thread, so your sense of personal entitlement to do whatever you want, wherever you want, isn't exactly a big surprise.

1. You may want to actually look beneath the title of the thread to find the real issue.

2. One of the very few benefits of being a pathetically nerdy social pariah comes from the time spent reading while normal people are out enjoying themselves with other humans. I can't remember the last time I felt the need for a thesaurus. Thank God they didn't have video games when I was a kid or I would have spent far less time reading. OTOH, I would have a lot of Halo experience to brag about.

3. Upon review, I think you'll find a number of my posts mention my level of ignorance and exhibit clear reluctance to tell others what they should think. I do typically offer my opinions and when someone initiates personal attacks, I sometimes respond in kind. Sometimes not. I also try to correct what I view as misinformation from time to time, especially on matters that are as important to many people as college recruiting is. I have and will continue to encourage people to correct my statements on such matters. Accuracy takes precedence over my ego. And nobody with half a brain who has made as many mistakes as me would begin to be inclined to tell others what to think/do. In this particular cases, my directions to you were actually part of the homage I was paying to you and your posts in this thread. I tried to make my intentions clear in the first paragraph of my previous post.

4. Anyone with experience with this site knows that if a poster initiates a personal attack, there is a good chance they will be responded to in kind.

Thank you gentlemen for proving my point about this site. But wait...Joe, Skarp, Blind Squirrel are you the same person? Writing style seems eerily familiar.

Would that be a writing style that you have encountered before? It is a style that I expect my kids to have when they graduate from college. Nothing special or notable in many contexts.

Okay, this is getting pathetic. I'm done.

What argument? A simple post of an opinion (no personal attack BTW) on this site invites about 8 attacks on your intelligence every single time. I have been reading for quite a while before I joined so not new in the least. And being chastised for personal attacks puullleeeaaazzzeee  there is no real debate, just assumptions, and being called a few names to boot so those who live in glass trailers shouldn't throw beer cans.

Apparently you need a primer on rudimentary topical discourse. You see, when someone takes a position on something, like whether boomboxes should or should not be allowed at softball games, they are making an argument. That argument can either be good (that is, based on sound principles, reasoning, and evidence), or it can be weak (based on personal opinion and/or anecdotes).

On this site, if you make weak arguments you can expect to be challenged on them. So when you say something like "it's about the girls" (an argument), someone might choose to unpack that statement and show it to be utterly without content. At that point you can either address the identified shortcomings in your argument and revise it to account for them (good), or you can simply restate your argument again and again as if it hasn't already been shot full of holes (pathetically weak).

If you don't want your intelligence to be attacked, you might want to try adopting the former argumentative technique, rather than the latter.
