That would be a decision for the coach. I am sure this was not a matter of lack of confidence in the hitter. The other coach was stalling to run out the clock. The batter probably would not have got to hit anyway.. The Ice coach had no option but to do what he did to get to another inning and get his team in a position to win.

Um, if a team is losing, and that team is home team, then the batter not only would get that at bat she would have all the time in the world. So why start another inning?

The Ice batter was the last batter...would have taken a home run to tie the game. Even with the very best of batters the chances of that happening are slim. Since the opposing coach was calling timeouts to run out time, another batter would not have had the opportunity to hit. I said it before and I say it again...the coach was smart to do what he did. You may not agree, but the scoreboard did. Any arguements on your behalf are trumped by the scoreboard! You may not agree with me, but it it hard to argue with the final score!

It was a brilliant move by the Ice coach. If I were on the opposing team I would have been upset, but it would have been because I was outcoached in that particular situation. I have acknowledged the opposing coach was smart in doing what he did by calling timeouts...try tipping your hat to the Ice coach for his smart countermove.

The visiting team can call all the time outs that ia allowed, the home team still gets their full a bat. I have seen many a teams rally with 2 outs. A couple of years from now when you are at the college showcase maybe then you will see the scoreboard don't matter.

At any rate I agree to dissagree with the way we each view it.

When I am at the college showcase, if my DD makes it there, my views may be different. They may be different tomorrow depending on the situation. Since this was not a college showcase tourney, I doubt if that was the main concern by the coach at the moment. My daughter does not play for this coach, so that is not a concern of mine.

I wrote my last post after a long day, and with a two year old jumping in my lap while I was writing. In doing so, I incorrectly wrote that the batter would be the last hitter (not a pool game here). I agree with you that a two-out rally was possible, and that other batters would have had the chance should that girl have gotten on base. That said, I still like the odds of three outs vs. one against a team as talented as the Riptide. Grant it, Riptide could have put the game out of reach on their next at bat, but I suspect the Ice coach had faith in his pitcher and defense that they could hold them and get another opportunity during their next at bat.

Furthermore, we don't know the situation with his hitter at the time...maybe she was having an off weekend, maybe the hitter behind her was having an off day, and he wanted a better opportunity to get to some other hitters, maybe it was just an instinctive, spur of the moment move on his part to make the decision he did. For all I know, he had a panic moment against a very good Riptide team and got lucky with his decision. A previous post said the Ice had some new faces. I am not sure if this is true or not, but maybe this was a new or fill-in player, who the coach did not have confidence in at that point. Who cares? For whatever the reason, it worked...his team made it to the final. On that day, at that moment, he made the decision that worked for his team. Would I have personally made that call? I doubt it seriously if I would have even thought of it. For whatever the reason, he felt he needed to get to the next inning to win the game.

My point is before questioning the class of a coach on the WWW, maybe it would be a good idea to know all the facts surrounding the situation.

Maybe someone questioned the tactics of a coach, but I assure you that is not my style!
Good conduct or bad conduct on the field by a coach is the coaches reputation not mine!
To put it simple, I was thinking out loud on the options and my view of the situation not my view of a coach.

After all, life would be boring if we were all alike!!

I can assure you my daughter has never played for Ice 96. Not many 10U eligible DD's are playing for 2nd year 12U teams. If you quit assuming you might find yourself making an intelligent post!

Red White My View:I agree with you 100 percent that it would be boring if we all had the same views. That is what makes this site fun.

That said, my orignal discussion regarding this topic was in response to the following post by ZIG. Here is the part of his text that I took issue with:

I cannot see how questioning the reputation of a coach on the WWW does any good, especially when you hide behind a pretend name like ZIG. I have checked my facts and the player to which he is referring is legal. I see no difference in using the strategy utilized by the Ice coach, than the strategy employed by the Riptide coach. Both coaches were using strategies with the intent of putting their team in a position to win. One strategy worked, the other did not. As I stated originally, if the coaches did anything wrong then that is the job of the umpires on the field to determine. If they don't then it is up to the opposing coach to point out if something is not handled correctly. As I also stated, we do not know what caused the Ice coach to make the decision he did...he knows more about his team than any of us.

As for ZIG he also "assumed" I have a daughter playing for Ice, or one that filled in for Ice. Again he is assuming things without fact. Like you, I simply expressed my views regarding his comments about the Ice. For the record, I have also supported the Bandits 96 on this site. I do not have a daughter playing for that team either.
