All of the technology that goes in to fastpitch softball is solely for the hitter. The compression of the ball and the speed the ball reaches coming off of the composite bats. My DD is a pitcher and also prides herself in hitting the corners and her movement on her rise ball. I give my daughter the choice to wear a mask or not. She chooses not to. Is this really an arguement of wearing a mask? Why don't we argue about cooling down these hot bats? A great coach told me once "you can't fix a Wal-Mart swing with a 300$ bat". But with all of the technology that goes into the new composite bat they sure are getting close.

A good deal of modern tech has been applied to bats over the past few years which has made them much hotter, yes. I kinda miss the high pitched ping from the old walmart specials.

Anyway, in addition, female athletes to date have evolved to become much more stronger and confident specimens which I think is partly the result of better coaching/technical instruction at the younger levels - not to mention the greater percentage of strength and conditioning regimens that many of these girls employ today - which was virtually non-existent 10 years ago.

With respect to all of these changes that have been taking place, what is the one thing that has remained constant? Field dimensions.

Therein lies the problem - you can't hardly expand the under-hand pitching distance from 40' or 43' to say 50' or 53' or 60' without that in itself creating a whole new set of problems.

Or can you?

not trying to start anything but ain't nobody good enough that every once in a while that ball is trown over the plate and if your dd gets nailed in the face, you going to blame it oh her becasue you gave her the choice to wearit??? thats where parenting comes in in my opinion, wear it or don't pitch!!!! you will feel very very bad if she gets nailed dude...

i can't stand the dad that is so confident that his dd has such good control that she never throws it over the plate... thats BS from the third degree!! it only takes one mistake and your dd's face will be messed up forever... why take the risk?? oh yeah, because she is that good... yeah right!!

I have no strong opinion on this issue. I do wonder if, given the available information on the potentially serious affects from the hits suffered by youth football players (including those studies funded by the NFL), that the folks who condemn others for not protecting their kids would allow their sons to play football? I wonder if, given the statistics on 16/17 year old drivers, a single one of these people allow their under 18 year old child to drive a multi-ton vehicle with the ability to go 100 mph, particularly when nothing can be done to prevent the actions of the drivers around them?

SpazDad:

You are the last one I would credit as utilizing common sense in this discussion. We are not talking about other sports or car driving. A typical tactic in debate is if you can't logically debate your view then change the subject or go off course. We are talking about softball on this site.

Blind Squirrel and JJ's Dad are the major reasons I support wearing a mask. Letting your child make the decision? That is exactly what is wrong wih kids today...they are doing their parents job of making decisions.

Trying to interject any logic or common sense into this discussion is an exercise in futility. All it will lead to is name calling and personal attacks on your fitness to parent.

but.....but.........by the looks of your avatar pic............nevermind (ha ha)

Okay I'll try this again - What is the overall feasability in expanding the dimensions of the infield to a particular degree? I am NOT saying I think it will cure the issue. Just wondering if it's ever been discussed, debated, classified as illogical, died on the senate floor...........etc.

Spaz - I want to hear your view.

So use of relevant analogies have no place in debates/discussions? In what, the first grade? I do appreciate your point about the specific context of this thread. That had eluded me until now. The expressed reasoning as it relates to softball applies equally and directly to the dangers involved in other sports as well as other optional activities that parents may or may not allow their child to be engaged in. I didn't expect people to have different views of danger to their kids be based solely upon whether or not it involved girls playing softball. I feel like such an idiot.

I must give you credit for creativity: Extrapolating from whether or not a parent believes the danger is sufficient enough for them to require their kid to wear a mask to parents abdicating their responsibilities is brilliant.

I look forward to further parenting guidance from such an omniscient, infallible expert.

I would also be interested to hear what how you and others actually address what I posted about driving and football but I suspect the answers would not be in your own self interest, their relative merit in this thread notwithstanding.

And Thank You for manning up and responding to the points I made which surely would have been just as easy as the response you did provide.
