3rd Strike looking

by Coweta89 » Mon May 10, 2010 6:29 pm

I don't understand.

Have you ever heard of blue decideing not to call 3rd strike looking? This forces a team to live off the bats.

We played over 30 innings this weekend in HS playoffs and the blue did not call 3rd strike looking for either team. Both pitchers are or will be D1, Our pitcher who has only 18 walks all season(175 innings pitched), walk 11 in three games and it wasn't beacuse she missied her spot. She had nearly 35K's in the 3 games, All swinging.

Blue refuss to answer question, when approached.

I don't understand.

2 D1 pitchers facing off? Sounds like a heck of a game despite the bad calls! What schools?

I'm not saying ALL umps are bad...But lately I've seen some that DO NOT belong on the field. Especially during a playoff game!! It takes away from the game when umps behind the plate start squeezing one pitcher, and even at some points during the game just stands there like he's lost! The game I witnessed had a terrible umpire... (I didn't even have a dd on either team!) Some just need to stick to rec. ball....A little less drama there!!

I am saying most high school umps are bad.

My daughter plays in the Houston area and my experience this year has been that the plate umpiring has been uniformly poor. They don't give corners, they give edges. If the ball comes straight down the edge of the plate (usually half a ball), they will call a strike. They want it straight and they like belt high.

A normal 7 inning game in high school should be about 100 to 120 pitches. During the playoffs this year 140 to 150 pitch games have been the norm. Keep in mind both pitchers are running these high pitch counts. Often these are gold level pitchers.

Very few high school umpires understand the concept of the strike zone. I wonder if they have ever been to class for instruction about what strikes are supposed to look like. It is a good thing high school is moving back to 43 feet. Many of these teams have some very good gold level hitters. When the pitchers have to throw "fat pitches" to keep from walking batters, it can get somewhat dangerous.

All 3 games went extra innings. Even college scouts where making faces, chuckling and rolling eyes. Two of these blue where from Houston area not sure where the third was from.

College scouts at a HS game? - I thought they only attended select or travel ball tournaments?

There were two D1 pitchers there. Of course the stands were filled with scouts and college coaches!

I don't want to cause controversy, All I can say is that there wasn't any other playoff games, that all three games went extra innings last weekend in 5A.

:) Sorry
