Classification "A" & "B" in ASA Softball

Can someone please explain to me what qualifies you as an "A" or "B" team in ASA? I've heard many different explanations so I'm confused.

It is literally the click of the mouse that makes you A or B. There is a dropdown box on VTD when you register your team.

There is more that goes with this though. For example, they (the JO commissioners) won't allow you to start a new team full of A players and register B. Or if you are a B team and place in a bunch of A tournaments, they may make you reclassify to A.

In Texas and in the younger age groups, you may still find B teams that should be A teams, especially state registered teams (versus metro teams).

Do you have a question in particular? There is at least one commissioner that I know of that reads HB. Maybe he can chime in.

A & B, by the ASA rule book is supposed to be determined by how you pick your team. Any and every team who hand picks a team via invitation, tryouts and such is technically an "A" team. Teams comprised of girls from different regular teams that come together to play are "B". THAT IS BY THE ASA RULE BOOK! (and you can look it up)

Most honest people choose it by the level of play they wish to compete at, ASA championship level they want to work towards and it is based on the talent they have. (trophy chasers excluded) And some associations choose to use this method also.


Now the liberal "on the street" interpretation is by the caliber of players you have and the level of play that you can compete at.

This always comes up about Gold or not Gold. If you want to pick your players and try to earn a berth to the Gold or A Nationals, then you can (except in California, and I think that is wrong) and should be able to do it. If not, then go B.

I asked our local commissioner that same question. She said basically, you can classify yourself as a "B" team until you start dominating most "B" tournaments in which you participate over a period of time. At that point, they may "request" that you re-classify your team.

Yeah well that's a problem, that is NOT what the ASA book says and that is why there are so many north TX "B" teams that stay in "B". Oddly enough, it was a Missouri City (S. Houston) team that placed 4th at "B" Nationals last summer in 14u. That team was a TRUE "All-Star" team, never played together until April of last year, girls were on seperate "REC" teams until that time. When local Commissioners are stating things like that, there is a problem.
