UIL Eligiblity Rule when changing schools

by akks1382 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 4:35 pm

Due to a death in the family, there is a possiblity that we will be moving to northeast TX after this semester is over (at the end of December or very beginning of January). Can someone explain to me the eligibility ruling for a high school student playing sports when moving school districts? Are they required to be enrolled a certain number of days? The move will be 6 hours away from where we currently live. I'm just concerened that if we move prior to the end of the school year, she will be ineligable to play when softball starts in mid-Jan. TIA

The rules from UIL are only that she is not moving for athletic purposes, is living with parents/guardians inside the school district zone(s), and has been enrolled/attended regular classes for 15 days prior to the first day of the season, (January 17, 2014.) The UIL leaves a lot up to the district though. Honestly with a move 6 hours away and the obvious reason for exception, you probably won't have any issues. However, a lot may depend on the district that you move into.

Contact your new school and start the process now. I've seen 3A offer no love at all and 4A be very reasonable after an appeal process

Thank you both! I don't think there will be a problem with the school we would be moving too as it is the one we originally moved from (a 2A program). I just wanted to make sure that UIL rules wouldn't keep her from playing, because if so, then we would put off moving her until after the season was over.

You might need to get a release from your current school (or district) based on where she played last year. Contact the incoming coach to let them know and start working on it now before the Christmas break.

She is a 2017, so did not play hs last year. As such, she would not need a release, correct?

If she didn't play HS last year, you should be good. I would still contact the incoming coach to make sure there isn't any "strange" paperwork that needs to be completed. However, since it isn't Football, you might not get an answer for 2-3 years if she was legal.
