Torrance National Invitational Tournament

What do you do when your team is so vastly superior the game threatens to be a mismatch from the start. Well you can do what Edison did and bench most of your starters. The little used reserves got to get some swings and the game remained close for awhile. The Chargers scored 7 in the last 2 innings to win going away. Edison didn't exactly tear the cover off the ball but they received 10 walks, 2 hit batters, 2 wild pitches and stole 4 bases.
Edison 1 2 0 5 2=10
Rialto 0 0 3 1 0= 4

Leyba led off the game with a walk, stole 2nd and came in on O'Connors single to center. The 2nd began the same way with a walk to DeMarco and a stolen base. With 2 outs Feuerstein was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd. Both runners scored on an error by the 1st baseman and the Chargers were up 3. After Mercedes O'Connor had limited Rialto to an infield hit, Karley Wester came in to pitch the 3rd and immediately got into trouble. Two walks and an E-3 loaded the bases and a double to right scored 2 with the 3rd run coming in on a groundout.

Edison scored 5 in the 4th on only 1 hit. DeMarco walked and stole 2nd and Tahti walked as well. Feuerstein drove in 1 with a single to CF and Hickman walked to load the bases. K. Wester walked to force in a run and a wild pitch brought in another.Talataina was hit by a pitch to reload the bases and another wild pitch scored a run. Zapotoczny walked which brought in a new pitcher who immediately walked DeMarco for the 5th run of the inning. When Wester put the 1st 2 hitters on in the 4th O'Connor returned to the circle. She hit the 1st batter to load the bases and with 1 out what should have been an RBI single turned into a 7-4 force when the runner thought the ball was caught. Plaza reached on the pitcher's error to open the 5th and Baca singled to LF. Leyba brought them both in with a double to LF to complete the scoring. Cordova pitched the 5th and retired the side in order.

The pitcher from North Torrance didn't seem that impressive but she kept the Chargers off balance and out in front all day. She only struck out 2 but scattered 3 hits. Cordova also gave up 3 hits while striking out 7. One mistake was all it took.
Edison 0 0 0 0 0 0=0
North 0 0 0 0 0 1=1

Three times the Chargers put 2 runners on base but each time was with 2 outs and they couldn't get the key hit. Hickman's single and Plaza's BB in the 1st, K. Wester's double and O'Connors BB in the 3rd, and Africano's single and Sherman's HBP in the 6th. Plaza also came close to hitting it out in the 6th but the ball dide just short of the fence. The Saxons might have scored in the 1st but got an out call at 1st that was questionable at best. They put a runner at 2nd in the 2nd on an E-3 and an errant pickoff throw from the catcher. They got a walk and single in the 4th but left both runners on base. Then came the bottom of the 6th. It had already been announced as the final inning and fans were getting into ITB mode. The 1st hitter made sure it was the last inning by putting Cordova's pitch over the CF fence for the game's only run.

Is Torrance updating the scores anywhere?
I would like to see how the other games are going
They didn't give Uno a gate pass to this tourney?

It's free, he doesn't need a pass. For further scores see below.

It was a rematch of Wednesday's game but there were more Reno girls on hand this time and they made a game of it...for awhile.
Edison 1 0 0 0 6 3=10
Damante Ranch 0 0 0 0 0 0=0

It was overcast and cool most of the day in Torrance and the Charger bats took a few innings to warm up. They did score in the 1st inning on a bunt single and stolen base by Karley Wester and RBI single by Mercedes O'Connor. Sammy Cordova was on her game and allowed only a walk for the 1st 3 innings. Edison got a runner to 3rd in the 2nd on Plaza's double and a passed ball but couldn't score. Ali Wester ended up on 3rd in the 3rd after her infield hit, stole base and tag-up on a fly ball but again the timely hit was lacking.

The Mustangs created a little threat of their own in the 4th, loading the bases with 1 out but an attempted squeeze ended in a force at the plate and Cordova struck out the next batter. Perhaps the Chargers were awakened by almost falling behind because they came out firing on all cylinders in the 5th. Africano singled up the middle and A. Wester singled to LF. K. Wester was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Hickman drove in 2 with a single to center. After a stolen base O'Connors ground out got a run home and a wild pitch plated another. They then reloaded the bases on consecutive infield hits by Talataina, Plaza and Feurstein. Africano then got her 2nd hit of the inning, a 2-run double to cap the scoring.

A. Wester led off the 6th with her 3rd single of the day and her sister followed with a bunt double. The 3rd-baseman hesitated on the play and picked it up just as it appeared to be going foul. Hickman walked to load the bases and O'Connor doubled in 2 right over 3rd base. The final run scored when the catcher's throw back to the pitcher went over her head. The Mustangs got 2 on in the 6th but the Chargers turned an 8-3 double play to defuse the threat. It was all 2s for Cordova: 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 hit batters but most important was the 0 runs.

Freedom 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0
Norco 0 0 0 0 1 0 x=1

I was eager to see the #1 team in the state play but it didn't figure to be much of a game. Freedom had lost 9-2 to Mt Ridge AZ a team Norco had defeated 5-2. But that is why they play the game. If you knew nothing about these teams you would be hard pressed to know who was #1 and who was the underdog. Taylor Koenig made a couple of nice plays on bunts and the Freedom center fielder made a couple of fine catches in the outfoeld. Norco's Emily Lockman might have been the more impressive pitcher (1 hit, 9 strikeouts) but the Freedom pitcher wasn't far off. Norco put runners at 1st and 3rd in the 1st but couldn't score and an IF hit by Sandoval and wild pitch got a runner to 2nd in the 2nd. A single by A. Lockman and an E-7 put 2 on with 1 out in the 4th but again they missed the clutch hit. You always had the feeling that Norco was going to break through and they finally did (in a manner of speaking) in the 5th. Reed singled to CF and stole 2nd and E. Lockman came through wit an RBI-single to center. That was all they got but all they needed as Lockman retired the final 18 batters. Norco preserved their perfect record but Freedom will go home knowing they can play with the best.

ElModena 7 4 1 1=13
Sunnyslope AZ 0 0 0 0= 0

If you look up mismatch in the dictionary they have a picture of this game. I would like to give you some specifics but the ElMo people can't be bothered with putting their roster on Max Preps or their numbers on the school website. It all started well for the Arizonans as they got the 1st batters in the 1st but then all heck broke loose. #28 singled followed by a passed ball. #2 singled in the run, stole 2nd and came home on #21s HR to CF. #33 singled, stole 2nd and scored on a two base error by the 3rd baseman. #13 singled to CF and when the CF booted the ball another run came in. #7 also provided an RBI single before Sunnyslope finally got the 3rd out. ElMo didn't slow down in the 2nd scoring 4 on the following procession: GO, HBP, SB, RBI single, single, SB, 2-RBI single, RBI single, force, K. It is not an exaggeration to say ElMo ran at will on this catcher. They scored unearned runs in the 3rd and 4th before Sunnyslope finally got their 1st hit in the 4th. Time had not expired but the game was called by mutual agreement after 4.

This wasn't a bad effort for the 1st year of the tournament but if they want to replace Faster To First they need to put the capital I in Invitational and bring in better teams. Virtually all of the out-of-state teams stunk and were evidently selected less on their prowess and more on their willingness to come. How about teams from San Diego or NorCal?

This was what is called sarcasm and i was referring to:
Unfortunately we will not be covering this event. There are a lot of younger players that don't even know this event existed until they saw it here. CSUF did not want us to cover the event, they are the first college to turn us down.

But again....
Thanks for the updates, any news from today's games?

I don't think you can classify all the out of state teams as terrible.
The Nevada teams actually won quite a few games, and hung tough in some others vs the top teams. For a small state who just started their season a few weeks ago they actually did pretty well. They have trouble vs the top California teams but compared to the rest of the states out there they are pretty competitive. Not elite- but not terrible either.
