Great Oak @ Murrieta Mesa 3-29

by oldNlazy » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:39 pm

Great Oak had lost 3 in a row and Murrieta Mesa 5 so something had to give. As it usually happens it gave on the side of the superior team as Great Oak broke out of their hitting slump to pound 14 hits and collect a solid, if not spectacular victory.
Great Oak 0 0 2 0 1 4 0=7
Murrieta Mesa 1 0 0 0 0 1 0=2

The Rams hadn't scored for the last 2 games and looked to continue that streak in the 1st. But with 2 outs, Wolfpack pitcher Hannah Dewey lost her control. After giving up a single she walked 3 straight batters to force in a run. Great Oak had a runner on in the 1st and 2 in the second but failed to score. In the 3rd they finally broke through. Washazaki led off with a bunt single and went to 3d on Danica Mercado's single to right. After a stolen base they tried a squeeze but Dewey fouled it off so they let her swing away. She sent a blooper to CF which was caught and the runner was doubled up at home. But Mo Mercado drove her sister in with a single up the middle. She went to 3rd on a SB and WP and came in on Tower's single to CF. The Rams had 2 hits in the 3rd but the rally was defused when Gloady threw out the runner trying to steal second. The same thing happened to Great Oak in the 4th. Lopez singled and was thrown out trying to steal before Gloady singled.

The Wolfpack loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th. D. Mercado singled to CF and and Dewey and Tower were hit by pitches. The run scored on a sac fly by Ferstle. Mesa got 2 walks in the 5th but once again had a runner thrown out stealing. Great Oak finally broke it open in the 6th. Gloady led off with a double off the LF wall and 2 groundouts got the run in. D. Mercado then singled up the middle, stole 2nd and scored on Dewey's bloop single. M. Mercado then blasted one high and deep over the LF fence. After 2 singles and a BB the Rams scored in the 6th on an errant pickoff throw at second. Both teams had 2 runners on base in the 7th but neither could score. Dewey scattered 5 hits and struck out 7 but was perpetually threatened because of her 8 walks. She was helped by a double play and the 2 runners thrown out at second.
