Two monster games today as Orange Lutheran hands Norco their 1st loss of the year 2-1 and Canyon takes Riverside King 2-1 on an 8th inning squeeze by Lauren Young.
Norco 0 0 0 0 0 1 0=1
O. Lu. 0 1 0 0 0 0 1=2
Lockman vs Vecvanags
Orange Lutheran has been a giant killer year this year and today proved no exception against the state's #1 ranked team. Norco, a team that is not spectacular but doesn't beat itself, played fast and loose with the glove. In the 1st Taylor Koenig made up for her error by turning a double play after the Lancers had 2 on and 0 outs. In the 2nd an error by Reid was cashed in when Arents, Wagner and Gornick hit consecutive singles. It was only 1 because the runner was thrown out at the plate on Wagner's hit. Nobody put more than 1 runner on base until the 6th when Goodwin tied the game with a HR to left-center. Smith led off the top of the 7th with a single which brought Osias to the circle. She walked Reed but got the next 2 hitters. The old adage about not walking the leadoff hitter would come back to haunt Lockman as she walked Arents. Wagner followed with an infield hit before Koenig made consecutive plays to get the force at 3rd. The end came when Heather Hall bounced one up the middle which Reed tracked down in back of 2nd but couldn't hold onto.

In the nightcap King's Alexis Osorio hooked up with Canyon's Hailey Hilburn in an old fashioned pitchers' duel. Hilburn allowed just 1 hit, striking out 12. Osorio gave up 3 hits but struck out 17. Every Canyon starter struck out at least once.
M.L. King 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0=1
Canyon 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1=2
King had a chance to perhaps blow it open in the 1st after 2 walks and an error loaded the bases with 1 out but Hilburn got the next 2 hitters to escape. A walk to Ortiz, stolen base and single by Lauren Young gave the Comanches 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 1st but Osorio calmly struck out the next 2 batters. In the 2nd Canyon used 2 walks and a hit batter to load the bases with 1 out. Ortiz then singled off the 3rd baseman's glove for the game's 1st run. The 2nd Canyon error and a walk put 2 on with 0 outs in the 4th but Hilburn let them get no further. King tied it in the 6th when a hit batter and the 3rd Comanche error put runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs and Cobb came through with a single to RF. After that, the next 10 batters made outs to set up the ITB. After King failed to get the bunt down Hilburn gave them a reprieve with a wild pitch but they couldn't take advantage and left the runner on 3rd. For Canyon, Ortiz not only got the bunt down she beat it out. One out later Young dropped a perfect squeeze bunt and the game was Canyon's

Other games Thursday.
Sheldon of Sacramento used both speed and the long ball to take Cienaga of Tucson 7-2.

In an earlier game Cienaga pounded Riverside Poly 10-1. The Arizonans jumped to 6-0 lead in the 1st 3 innings and wrapped it up with a 4 run 6th. Poly had plenty of chances with 8 hits a walk and Cienaga error but couldn't get the clutch hit.

In the day's opener Valencia pounded Murrieta Valley 9-0 in 5 innings. The Vikings used 8 hits including back-to-back HRs in the 4th. Carly Mortenson struck out 9 and allowed no baserunners except for Olivia Sanchez's double in the 5th.

Other Thursday scores

Sheldon 7 Kennedy 5
Etiwanda 8 El Camino 6
Pacifica 8 San Clemente 0

Taukeiaho vs Soles
These 2 teams were expeted to meet in the Winner's bracket but came up a little short and found each other in the Loser's bracket. If that wasn't bad enough the game was delayed for close to an hour when the lights failed to come on. Throw in accusations of illegan pitch on almost every ball Soles threw and it was on. The Pionerers loaded the bases in the 2nd with 1 out on singles by Czyrklis and Mueth and a hit batter and scored on a wild pitch. It looked like it might stay that way as neither side really threatened through the middle innings but the Eagles put it together in the 6th. Taukeiaho beat out an IF hit and Spaulding reached on an error. A wild pitch moved them up and Rentschler walked to load th bases. Ramos then cam through with perhaps her biggest hit of the season a 2-run single to right. Two outs later, what should have been an inning-ending strikeout turned into wild pitch scoring the 3rd run.

Vista Murietta 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0
El Toro 0 0 0 0 0 1 x=1
Vista Murrieta saw no need to waste UCLA-bound pitcher Selina Ta'Amilo against lightly regarded El Toro (6-10 State Ranking 318) but when Aimee Garcia found herself with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 1st those plans were laid to rest. She turned a bouncer back to the circle into a 1-2 force and gor the 3rd out on a K. To be honest it looked like a mismatch and the Chargers did nothing other than an IF hit off Ta'Amilo's foot. VM got 7 hits off Lauren Hammond and threatened several times but could never get the clutch hit. In the 1st Sierra Romero doubled and stole 3rd but advanced no further. In the 3rd the Romero sisters got back-to-back singles but again died on base. In the 4th Morano singled was bunted to 2nd and went to 3rd on a WP but could not score.
In the 5th they got an error and a single by Datil. Sydney Romero's long fly was pulled in at the fence while both runners tagged and moved up. Sierra Romero hit it hard but it was only a line out to end the inning. With a runner on 1st in the bottom of the 5th Sierra flagged down a ball that was headed to center field and stepped on 2nd to end the inning. VM again threatened with 2 outs in the 6th. Swearingen and Ta'Amilo singled and Montgomery came in to pitch. A BB loaded the bases but Datil's fly ball ended their final threat of the game. Meanwhile the Chargers were finally figuring out Ta'Amilo. Harman doubled down the RF line and DiTommaso hit one that Sierra went deep in the hole to get the ball and appeared to throw her out but the umpire said safe. The next batter struck out which should have been the 3rd out of the inning and given an opportunity Harm dropped a double down the RF line for the game winner.

Aliso Niguel 4
Etiwanda 3
Etiwanda was playing without their cleanup hitter Desi Martinez so they had a very small margin of error and they were not able to meet those demands. They got 3 hits each from Taukeiaho and Spaulding but only 1 from the rest of the team. Wesley, usually a reliable pitch, couldn't keep the ball in the park and there was some major brain freeze at the end. The Wolverines got 3 hits in the 1st without scoring because one hitter was thrown out going for a double. The run did finally come in via an E-2. The Eagles tied it up with a walk and singles by Taukeiaho and Spaulding but Aliso Niguel came right back on a HR by Gilbuena. Etiwanda tied it back up in the 5th on a double by Taukeiaho and single by Spaulding but Aliso took the lead for good in the 5th on a double by Sharabba and HR by Mikkelsen. Clinging to a 1 run lead in the top of the 7th they probably should have just walked Taukeiaho and Spaulding and taken their chances. They didn't and it almost cost them. With 1 out Taukeiaho hit it over the CF fence and Spaulding followed with a single. Rentschler singled and Ramos walked and Riley, who had started the game but been removed in the 5th returned to the circle. The 1st 2 pitches she threw were balls and the coach had a conference with the batter, presumably to tell her not to swing until she got a strike. The next pitch was also a ball and you knew she wasn't going to swing now. But she did and also the next pitch which she fouled off. I'm not saying either of these pitches was a sure ball 4 but they might have been. She then hit a little nubber down the 1st base line which would have scored the tying run but for some reason the runner on 2nd didn't run and was thrown out at 3rd to end the game.

Canyon 6
St Francis, Sacramento 0
Canyo scored 2 in the 1st, 3rd and 6th to win going away. Hilburn allowed 3 hits and after escaping a bases loaded situation in the 1st and 2nd and 3rd in the 4th was not threatened. Canyon scored on a Martinez single, Swearingen double and E-4 in the 1st. In the 3rd it was singles by Young and Swearingen and 2 St Francis errors. In the 6th Rock singled, Young tripled her in and scored on a bad throw by the right-fielder.

There's no doubt the Mariners were the class of the tournament. I thought they might be the favorites because they have 2 good pitchers but I underestimated the strength of their lineup. DeWitt, Lee, Akiona, Campbell, Rivera, Canfield, Kloss; they can hurt you all up and down the lineup. I expected a good game wit Los Al but they just demolished them. They don't have much competition in their league so they should remain #1 until playoffs.

It doesn't look like they have much competition anywhere. Not one close game.

It was only a couple of weeks ago they had to go 10 innings to beat Yorba Linda 1-0. There was also 5-2 over Kennedy, 3-2 over Saugus and 2-0 over Foorhill.

Pacifica 9 Valencia 1
Kaylee Carlson was sharp but her defense made 3 errors behind her. Pacifica bats made up for that pounding Carly Mortenson for 7 hits, while receiving 2 walks, 2 hit batters and an error. Big blows were Akiona's solo HR, a 2-run single by Lee and a 2-run double by Choate. Valencia's run was unearned as Pacifica committed 2 errors in the 1st. I still think the Mariners are the most dangerous because of the 2-headed monster in the circle.

Los Alamitos 3 Sheldon (Sacramento)0
Both teams threatened once but it was a tight pitching duel until the 6th when the Sheldon defense let them down. An E-4 was erased when the runner was caught stealing but consecutive walks set up the play of the game. Mattie Scheele hit what would have been a single to right but the right-fielder let the ball get by her and the 2nd baseman juggled the relay to allow all 3 runs to score.

Etiwanda 0 0 1 0 5 0 0 0 1=7
Kennedy 0 0 0 6 0 0 0 0 0=6
Although they weren't playing for anything, this was easily the most exciting contest of the day needing 4 innings of ITB to resolve. Etiwanda struck first on singles by Salgado and Silva and Taukeaiho's sac fly. The Irish got that back in spades in the 4th. The leadoff batter singled but was thrown out trying to steal. Tat would be the last out for awhile; single, HR, BB, single, BB, HBP, double got them 5 runs with still only 1 out and an error by the catcher allowed the 6th run to come home. But the Eagles didn't hang their heads they came right back with 5 of their own. Silva walked, Isbel singled down the LF line and Taukeaiho singled to CF. Spaulding singled to LF to drive in a run and Gonzalez did the same driving in 2. Rentschler got a scoring fly ball and Ramos an RBI-single. Wesley came in to pitch the bottom of the 5th for a 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks.

Time had expired so the ITB kicked in in the 6th. Etiwanda got the sacrifice but they walked Taukeaiho intentionally and got Spaulding to line out to end the inning. It looked like it might be over quickly as Wesley wild-pitched the runner to 3rd but after a hit batter and stolen base put runners at 2nd and 3rd Wesley went to her strikeout pitch to get out of it. Etiwanda began the 7th with a single by Gonzalez and a stolen base but the next 3 batters went out in order. Kennedy followed the "book" and sacrificed the runner to 3rd but their squeeze was unsuccessful as Wesley got the runner at the plate. But maybe they took their foot of the gas pedal there as Kennedy loaded the bases on a walk and a hit batter. The next batter worked a full count and 1 pitch away from victory struck out.

The Eagles failed to sacrifice in the 8th but an Isbel single and another Int BB to Taukeaiho put 2 on but they got Spaulding to ground out. Kennedey opened the 8th with runners on 2nd and 3rd after a bunt single and a stolen base but the winning run was cut down at the plate after a grounder to 2nd. Wesley struck out the next 2 batters to send it to the 8th. Etiwanda got the winning run without benefit of a hit. A sacrifice and a Rentschler fly ball was all it took. WEsley then retired the side in order to preserve a hard-won victory.

Pacifica 1 0 0 0 2 2 1=6
Canyon 1 0 0 0 1 0 0=2
Hilburn vs Winegarner
Since both semis ended up at the same time I chose this one and was not sorry for my decision. Pacifica got on the scoreboard right away on a DeWitt single, stolen base and RBI-single from Lee. Canyon came right back in the bottom of the inning on a HR by Lauren Young. A single by Betschel and walks to Young and Swearingen brought Carlson to the circle. Stowe ripped a line drive but it was turned into a double play. The Comanches made 2 errors in the 4th but escaped when the lead runner got caught off 3rd.

The Mariners took the lead for good in the 5th. DeWitt was hit by a pitch, wild pitched to 2nd and came home on Canfield's blooper over first base. Campbell then doubled to the fence and Akiona was walked intentionally to load the bases. It seemed to work when Akiona struck out but Rivera bounced one up the middle for an RBI. In the Canyon 5th Munoz led off with a double and Young doubled her in. Swearingen walked on an illegal pitch which moved Young to 3rd and set up the biggest play of the game. Carlson booted a ball back to her and the tying run appeared to score but Swearingen was called out for leaving 1st early. That seemed to deflate them emotionally and they didn't threaten the rest of the game. Pacifica got a boost and just turned the screws a little tighter. The 6th should have been 1-2-3 but after making a great diving catch Stowe threw wildly to 1st. Given a 2nd chance the Mariners took advantage. Canfield drove one in with the longest single you will ever see and Campbell drove in another when the right-fielder couldn't hold her long fly ball. The final run came on a wild pitch after a walk to Rivera and single by Kloss.
